In This Thread Randy Cain used a SOL Emergency Blanket to make a bathtub floor for his ‘mid.

HeetSheetTub

I’d like to do that using polycro.

If anyone has done it, I’d like to know how you handled the corner tie-outs.

Is the tape that comes in the window kit sufficient?

Thanks.

There's a big thread somewhere around here about polycryo tarps. The good folks there experimented with a bunch of tapes and tieout designs. I think the winner was gorilla tape and nylon washers.

I've done it, the same way pic above shows. Simply cinched the corners in the shock cord/mitten hooks in my hexamid. But, when it comes to a multi week trip, I take the cuben floor for piece of mind, its a bit more durable.

a variation on that theme-
I did a bivy floor in .67 Argon and used poly cro inside for WP.
Good theory- lightest fabric out there to protect the waterproof inside.
I didn't laminate them in any way though, just sewed the edges, so slippery city and the argon soaked up enough water to defeat the weight savings of the fabric vs. regular 1.1 sil.

Hearing how well Zpacks netting floor's hold up- perhaps that's the better solution?
Protect the Polycro, stay dry, not absorb moisture…

"I've done it, the same way pic above shows. Simply cinched the corners in the shock cord/mitten hooks in my hexamid."

I'd like to "neaten up" the corners by folding and taping. The question is How do I attach the cord for connecting to the tent body?

"But, when it comes to a multi week trip, I take the cuben floor for piece of mind, its a bit more durable."

Yep, that's what I thought. But my .75 cuben floor leaks like a sieve after one 10 day JMT. So I'm going for "cheaply replaceable".

From the polycro thread my take home lesson: 3M Scotch Transparent Duct Tape, 1.88-Inch by 20-Yard (2120-A) did well for the tie out loops. no washers.

Gold Hat said it first in Treasure of the Sierra Madre:
Washers? We ain't got no washers. We don't need no washers. I don't have to show you any stinkin' washers!

I did this on my Hexamid duo with Velcro in the corners and two patches of Velcro along the back line. Works well and is lighter than cuben.

Hey Jeffrey,
Did you ever finish the Polycro tarp ? You were going to post photos of the tarp on the "Polycro Tarp" thread.
Thanks,
Carl

Hey Carl,

Yes I did, and I reprise my PM here for the benefit of the forum.

I made a 7×10 from a Frost King 0.7 mil. . I used it for ground camping twice, pitching it as a rectangular A-frame.. I have reconfigured it for an alternate corner hang for hammock camping. It will cover my 11' gathered end hammock for mild weather.

I also acquired some Ace 62" x 17.5' shrink wrap sheets, 1.2 mil which became 8.75' x 10' tarps which I used for alternate corner hang and a friend used as an rect. A-frame over our respective hammocks. . I used 3m clear duct tape to unite the cut halves. Same tape for the pull out loops. Pic: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gHf95E0jzNs/VBMqk6SFQ_I/AAAAAAAAO2U/3qOrFLZWh3k/s1600/DSC01031.JPG

These tarps weigh from 6 to 9 oz depending on the guylines (number, thickness, length)

The durability for the poly-cro amazes me–I've shoved it in my pack, dragged it over bushes, shook it and have seen no damage. . For two short trips I used a piece 8.75' x 5'–0.7 mil as a ground sheet over dirt with a few small rocks–no damage.

The view to the skies through poly-cro also impressed me, though our denser tree cover here in the NW didn't allow us to fully appreciate that.

I also made a 9' x 12' tarp with painters' plastic tarp 1.0 mil which proved very fragile on a backpacking trip. . One tug and it'd either get thin or a hole would develop. Just pushing it into the front pocket of my pack stressed it. . The size was great for a rectangular hang over my hammock, though. . Note to self: use painter's plastic tarp ONLY for painting. Pic of this one with a few duct tape patches: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hH04vIZTofY/U-F7AOTFuGI/AAAAAAAAOTA/CwlEuHwh4AQ/s1600/DSC00930.JPG

The transparent property lends to little privacy, but I'm too much an old fart to need nor want it. . I only hide the private parts to keep from offending others and to keep them from laughing to death.

If you are seriously going to use that thing as a groudsheet, I really hope you bring earplugs. They are super noisy.

Hi Justin

I can't recall my poly cro groundsheet keeping me awake either on the beach (NW coast trail, Olympic NP) or 200 yards inland. My mileage varies.

My friend with the 8.75' x 10' poly cro tarp did notice noise during a wind/hail storm.
