Hello. I'm long overdue on washing my rain jacket and my down jacket and sleeping bag.

Patagonia recommends using Granger's for their garments and Western Mountaineering told me that I could any type of soap, but that a "natural" one would be better.

After searching here, it seems that most manufacturers recommend Granger's but a few people use Nikwax. If I go with the Granger's, I understand I can use the Down Wash for my jacket and sleeping bag. But does it restore the DWR?

A Patagonia rep recommended using the Performance Wash for the rain jacket, but I see there is also a Waterprooofer product. Has anyone tried these and noticed a difference? While traveling overseas I did wash the jacket with normal detergent. Will using one of these products remove any traces of the prior detergent? Hope to get a clean slate.

or you could use Atsko Sports Wash

(just screwing with you – any of them are probably about the same – make sure and rinse good as in mutiple rinses – if the DWR doesn't work so good then re-apply – I've used Atsko Permanent Water and Stain Repellent but others are probably just as good – I've not washed down but it's tricky – google "wash down site:backpackinglight.com")

I use Nikwax (TechWash or DownWash) for the initial wash. And, then run a cycle of TX-DIRECT Wash-in to restore the DWR.
