Futther than you want to drive but best place would be the Chic Choc range. South shore, on the Gaspé Peninsula.Sept ideal.
Unless you mean Saint-Laurent-de-l'Île-d'Orléans, "St. Laurent" is a suburb in the NW area of the city of Montreal.
The areas surrounding Montreal are really quite developed (industrial/farming/residential), with the only "wilderness" areas being "cottage country" (lakes surrounded by city dwellers' summer cottages) — not suitable for backpacking. This applies in all directions from the city (with the Laurentian Mountains to the north, the Eastern Townships to the south, Ontario to the west).
When Montreal'ers want to go backpacking (without driving all the way to the Gaspe), they usually drive 2-3 hours, and go to the Adirondacks, Vermont's Green Mountains — or NH's Whites (a bit farther away).
So, ironically, if you want to backpack like a Montreal'er, you'll drive south, cross the border, and go to the Adirondack High Peaks area!
Edited to add driving time.
Roger,
I was recently in Mont Tremblant (about 1.5 hr drive north of Montreal) and had the opportunity to do some day hiking in Mont Tremblant National Park. It is quite the recreation area (lakes for kayaks, camping etc). It was beautiful hiking (early September) but you would need to check if they actually allow backpacking.
