Hi Everyone:

Please note that SD will be hosting another LIVE event discussing sleeping bags tomorrow, September 4th, at 1:30 Mountain time. Some of you joined our previous LIVE event on tents, and I hope you found that useful.

In addition to covering our sleeping bag philosophy, and why we are waging war on the mummy bag, we will be covering DriDown in some detail, giving a demo compared to untreated down, and reviewing the why's and how's regarding this new technology.

I hope to see some of you there! The link to sign up for the event is below.

Michael-

Love that you're doing these. I probably can't join in, but I'm curious about the backcountry bed.

Some questions/observations:

*I care more how the BB compares to a quilt than a mummy. (yes, mummies are dead, as all eight-year-olds know.)

*One sticking point for me is no option for a wide pad sleeve with the women's BBs. I'm deliberating going to a wide pad for better side sleeping comfort, but I am not a tall man.

*I've been pretty happy with a quilt for 3-seasons. The BB makes the idea of colder-weather trips more appealing — the non-restraining enclosure seems like the best of both quilt/mummy.

* I haven't looked carefully at the specs, but how do these compare weight-wise? Is there much penalty for the groovy arm/hand pockets, the foot escape hatches, or the overlap between the comforter and the rest of the bed?

*For winter (highly theoretical for me) I envision something like: BB, Klymt Inertia, wide CCF pad. Except, I highly suspect the Inertia isn't sized for women. I'm sure there are patent issues involved, but if SD could have a system that optimized underside insulation that would be sweet.

*Noticed in the specs it's duck down, not goose. I don't have a strong opinion on that, but would want some reassurance on virtues of duck down.

*No zipper holds a lot of appeal.

In short: I'm a side-sleeping, quilt-using women, and wondering if this will make a winter–or at least broader-shouldered–backpacker out of me.

And kudos to SD for doing interesting stuff!

Oh, I really like the concept of the back country bed but I feel it could have a really nice UL version using higher quality down and removing a connivence feature that adds extra OZ to the bag bed.

For example the hand pockets are not really needed and the fabric pad sleeve would be better off with 2 small light weight bungees.
