Seriously contemplating planning a trip to Escalante if I can't get a permit to do a rim-to-rim in the Grand Canyon next Spring. My question is for those who have hiked both….

After reading about Coyote Gulch I'm leaning more towards just planning the trip to Utah and skipping applying for a Grand Canyon permit since they seem to be so difficult to get.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

One of my favourite destinations in the Cont. US.
While there also look at hiking Cedar Mesa/ Grand Gulch

It looks like a beautiful place. I have a friend who lives there and has been bugging me to come out do some hiking with him. Guess I'm going to take him up on it. :)

Coyote Gulch is a beautiful canyon. But try to avoid it during the spring break period(s)… too many young noisy kids.

Comparing the Grand Canyon to Coyote Canyon or Grand Gulch… is like trying to compare Stupendous to Beautiful :)

There are literally THOUSANDS of canyons in Utah to hike. Talk to your friend about picking a nice one at a good time.

Pick up Michael Kelsey's book, Canyon Hiking Guide to the Colorado Plateau… or anything by Steve Allen or Utah Canyon Country by Kathy & Craig Copeland for some ideas.

Mid April to Mid May tends to be the best spring weather.

I'll pick those books up. Thanks for the recommendations. I still really do want to hike the Grand Canyon. Maybe I'll get lucky on the lottery.
