I need a little help in determining if I've planned for enough calories for an upcoming trip.
Trip details: 3.5 days from Tuolumne Meadows down the John Muir Trail, over Donohue Pass, travel north of Waugh Lake, up towards Parker Pass to rt 120 and back to Tuolumne. It's roughly about 40 miles with elevations ranging from ~9000-12000 ft. I'll be traveling with 3 others. Based on these details I used this link to calculate an average day of hiking:
http://www.nwhiker.com/calorieburn.html
Calculating on the high side (2mph for 7hrs with 3000 ft elevation gain)it estimates I will burn ~2300/day
Me details: I'm 5'10" 165 muscular/lean(approx. 10%BF) and burn mondo calories. I had my Resting Metabolic Rate measured a couple years ago and found I burn about 2100-2200 calories at rest.
My current meal plan for 1 day (subsequent days will be roughly the same within a couple hundred calories):
Breakfast
2 Nature's Path Oatmeal Packets w/ Justin's Chocolate Hazelnut Butter mixed in: 600 calories
Snack 1
Larabar Chocolate Coconut Chew Flavor: 240 calories
Lunch
Packit Gourmet Buffalo Chicken Wrap on Flour Tortilla: 510 calories
Snack 2
Larabar Banana Bread Flavor: 230 calories
Snack 3
5oz. Generic Trail Mix: approx. 700 calories
Dinner
Packit Gourmet Texas Chili: 570 calories
Dessert
(3) 90% Dark Chocolate squares and Justin's Chocolate Almond Butter pack: 360 calories
It totals 3,210 calories with everything included. I know everyone is a little different and I expect to run a little bit of a deficit but:
(1) This seems like a ton of food volume wise once re-hydrated and I don't want to feel sluggish/bloated.
(2) Is the estimated deficit of roughly 1,300 calories/day too much from anyone's personal experience? Theoretically it's a caloric deficit equivalent to a 2.6 lb weight loss/week which is close to whats considered normal, healthy weight loss (0.5-2.0 lbs/week) for people trying to lose weight.
(3) My main concern pertains to athletic performance over the course of the hike.
Long-winded, I know. But thanks for reading and fire away!
