Looking for some Orthopedic Dr's or therapist that can give me some good tips on getting back to hiking form.

Here's a picture of what it looks like now.

ankle

ankle

This happened on July 5th, 13 miles from the trailhead on day 4 of a 5 day hike, hiked out on the 5th day, went to work on Monday but the swelling was getting really bad, had it checked out by the Dr. and they put it in a splint until they could operate on it on July 17th, was in a splint for another week then into a walking boot and back to work on Aug. 18th

I'm doing thearpy now, I was just wondering if there's any thing else I can do to help the process along, besides anti inflammatories and ice, and what would be some good exercise's to incorperate?

Thanks in advane everyone, Jack

What's the loose screw doing in there? Lost/forgotten by the surgeon?

Cheers
PS: let it heal.

I broke mine at age 58 on my 2010 thru. I rehabbed pretty hard but it took about a year and a half before I could get back to 15 to 20 mile days. Good luck

@ Roger,

I thought the same thing, but it's actually where they screwed the 2 broken pieces together before they screwed on the plate, they came up from the bottom into the top piece of the bone.

Wow, that's some serious hardware. Here's to a swift & full recovery.

I too just broke my ankle (avulsion fracture of the fibula)on the last night of a 5 day backpacking trip in the Ritter Range. Long story short, I had my pack on and front packed my buddies pack from the lake shore where we dropped our packs for a swim up a couple of hundred yards to where we were going to setup camp. Flat ground, but I stepped on a small branch and rolled my ankle-heard a pop. I couldn't see my feet due to the front pack and the extra weight probably didn't help either. I hiked the 10 mi./4K ft. descent out in the morning and drove home that night.

Went to get X-rays the next morning and was told I had an avulsion fracture. They wrapped it, put me in a walking boot, and referred me to a podiatrist who saw me the next day. Podiatrist said it's a very small fracture and to treat it like a sprained ankle. Keep the boot on and try to take it easy. Leg up and ice as much as possible. Come back in 4 weeks for more x-rays and we'll go from there.

From what I've read, rest really is the best medicine for ankle injuries. Once you get past that hurdle, focus on range of movement, stretching, etc. Once you feel comfortable and have full balance, start slow and go from there. I'm hoping to sneak in a trip before winter hits, but I'm not going to rush it.

Bummer Jack. Looks like that must have hurt like heck.
I had a fractured fibula a couple of months ago. Recovered well, it was a very stable fracture. But…right this second I am waiting to get an X-ray for a fall I took exactly a week ago. I think I might have another fracture. I have been pretty good about working out and felt great. I was walking down a very steep grade with tools in hand. This time the pain was much worse than last time. Ough! I want this to go away.

At least it is made of titanium, so we can discuss it here.

Jack, I'm sorry for what you are going through. I think the key is to do what your doctors tell you to do, so that heals properly. It won't probably help you much, but think on this–you have had a lot of great years and adventures, and you will have more of them. But maybe not right now. When the winter is over and the ankle is properly healed, you'll be back in the saddle doing great things. I wish you a smooth recovery, Jack.

Jack,

Wishing you a speedy recovery and I like the advice that was given about your going to a lower calorie diet as you rest so you don't gain weight.

And to think that you hiked out a ton of miles with your daughter walking on that broken ankle.

You are tough as nails man.

Hey everybody,
Thanks for all the great responses and carrying.

@ Bill, you sound like a tough hombre too, I'm only 53, oh how my body hates getting old. LOL.
luckily I don't do to many high mileage hikes

@ Roger Dodger, to late, already gained more weight than I'd like to mention. LOL

@ Alex, to late for rest, I'm back at work and behind on my tarp orders.

@ Kat, good to hear from you, you stay safe with all them lions around you.

@ Gary, I'd still like to make it back up to your neck of the woods and do a hike together, looks like it may have to wait at least another year.

@ B.G. I hope it's titanium, or at least anodized aluminum. LOL I know it didn't go off at the airport medal detector.

@ Tony, I'm not that tough, just blessed with a high tolerance for pain, which sometimes is a bad thing.
