Super excited – I'm about to head into GNP for a 9 day trip. The entire thing was largely pieced together over the past year by the generous sharing and advice from BPL folks, so THANK YOU for your input! Huge props in particular to Dave C.

Anyway, last minute things before we head in that I want to make sure we get right, so looking for any info that helps.

1. We want to add a day on the front end. It's Saturday. My understanding is that hopes for doing this requires being at a ranger station super early (5:30 or so) on Saturday, being organized about what sites we want, and getting a little lucky. Is that correct? Is it of no use showing up on Friday afternoon for the same thing? Is there an advantage to having multiple people in our party trying for it?

2. Does ranger station matter? Many Glacier would be the most convenient, but we would be willing to go to another one if for some reason the chances were better.

3. Sounds like bugs are gone so we're planning on taking nothing bug-related, but just had a friend tell me he spent his entire trip in GNP inside a tent because the mosquitoes were a nightmare all day every day. I'm guessing he was there in late June and that this is a perfect time for no bugs. Am I delusional?

4. Anything words of wisdom on playing the "game" of walk-in campsite switching? I have a great itinerary – basically the Northern Loop + a couple side days to other lakes – but there are a couple sites I'd switch if I could. Why not go for absolute perfection? Are they cool with switching sites like MOJ for MOK? Not deal breakers at all, but if it's easy, we'd do it.

Thanks again!

We had really good luck with a female ranger at Many Glacier. I presume it doesn't hurt to ask if you can change your itinerary. If you can't get a better one, you may just add a day at the front doing a day hike to a nice spot your loop doesn't include. Most of the best spots we got to on our north-south traverse of the park were day-hikable.

If you want to make changes i would try to be at one of the backcountry offices as early as possible the day before I.E. Friday am for a Sat start. I usually show up at Apgar at 6am (dress warm) and am normally one of the first couple in line.

for openings

note that this shows fifty mountain as closed- this may change your northern loop plans

The weather looks to be fairly chilly and somewhat wet for your visit.

I stand corrected. Apgar and St. Mary are apparently the hubs now.

Simply not true–not now nor for a very long time.

Apgar is a main station, right outside of park headquarters. You can also get permits at Polebridge, Many Glacier, and the Waterton Lakes Visitor Center (the one in Canada). Waterton has to dial in–the others I'm not sure about. But Apgar (and St. Mary, of course) at least has been a mainstay of the permit system for quite a long while.

Cheers Curt.

1: Show up early on Friday, as you can book first thing the day before your trip. If that's too early for your schedule, no harm in showing up Friday afternoon and asking. No point in having more than one ask, as all the stations (Polebridge, St Mary, Waterton, Goat Haunt, Many, Two Med, Walton (if staffed)) are tied to the mothership in Apgar.

2: Probably not. Hypothetically Apgar is the most reliable. The internet in Many is still super slow this year.

3: Bugs are mostly dead. Got snowed on up at 8000' this past Sunday. Probably more relevant to chuck gloves and a fleece vest into your pack.

4: Get a copy of the most recent walk-in availability, and ask. The rangers should be more than happy to make what changes are possible.

was just at apgar getting a permit and fifty mountain is still closed, likely to remain so for balance of season.

In my experience the best way to find walk-in sites in the two National Parks I've frequented (GNP, YNP) is to plan a trip that is not based on the average 7 mile per day hike. This way your permit will not line up with the average permit along the routes you've chosen and opens you up to a larger sampling of availability.

Dave's advice regarding showing up and being inquisitive of options with the rangers is great. It's after labor day now which is helpful considering it's getting to be shoulder season too so best of luck in getting just what you want!
