Is seam sealing necessary on the solomid xl and if so what have you found to be the best method. I'm heading out for 7 days to trek around Evolution and Ionian Basin in 3 weeks and will be taking this as shelter.

I'm pretty sure that all of the MLD shelters require seam sealing. Both my SuperMid and my DuoMid did. That's de rigueur for the cottage industry shelters- none of them have taped seams.

The best way is to dilute the seam sealant in about five times the volume of mineral spirits, to thin it. This takes a lot of stirring since the silicone seam sealant isn't terribly soluble in the mineral spirits. Then just brush the stuff along the seam and it will wick into it nicely. Brush some on the seams of the anchor points, too- it strengthens them not insignificantly.

But you don't want to just rub globs of the unthinned sealant in the seams- it looks awful, and starts flaking off very quickly.

And, actually, you can just use silicone caulking if you're cheap- it's the same stuff as the seam sealant.

If you have an old silnylon shelter that has started leaking you can brush thinned sealant over the entire thing to restore it, but in this case dilute it even more, about ten to one.
