I've decided to start backpacking again after a 30 year break. The past few years I've done a lot of trail running and a few 50ks and 50 mile runs. I began doing long day hikes to peaks in the Tahoe area to build endurance. A day hike of Whitney this July really inspired me to explore more of the Sierras.

I'm starting to assemble some gear. I purchased a new ULA Catalyst backpack after trying and returning a number of other packs. I also purchased a used SMD Lunar Solo tent (looks brand new except for the messy seam seals) for $50. I'm leaning towards a good quality down bag since most of my trips will be in the Sierras (3 season) and I sleep very cold. Any thoughts or suggestions from the group on how to proceed without breaking the bank or buying things I won't like or need. I've looked at some of the gear lists and at 50+, I don't see myself going totally ultra light. I'm guessing a base weight in the 10-15 lb range is where I'll end up until I figure out what I really need and what I can do without.

Kate we returned to BPing recently after a long lay off too. Good to see you are getting called back to it. With the light weight gear available as well as the whole mind set of going lite the traveling part of the sport is soooo much more enjoyable. I especially like that folks are making a lot of their own gear as well as modifying what can be had on the market. This sight has been such a wealth of knowledge for us and Im sure you will benefit by all the good folks here as well.

As far as a good down bag there are many that come up for sale here on gear trade. If you have the time to wait for a deal you can save some money. Not sure if a quilt is appropriate for you but that is also a good alternative and at a good weight savings but being you are a cold sleeper maybe best to try one out first if possible.

E bay has had some nice WM bags up for sale lately as well. As this is definitely one of the primary pieces of your kit you will want to invest in a quality sleeping system and enjoy the warmth of a premier down bag and insulated pad instead of messing around with lesser quality items that will not hold to their warmth rating. I learned as most do you get what you pay for. You can go simple and dirt cheap on a lot of gear but there is a price to stay warm at little weight.

Good luck and enjoy BPing Light, jimmyb

I have a nice Western Mountaineering Megalite down3 season bag thatt I had WM "overstuff" with more down for 20 F..

BUT, now that water resistant down treatments are out like Dri-Down and Down-Tek I'd Only buy one of those.

Backpacker Magazine rated a group of them and Sierra Designs won easily.

These guys usually have some good advice & helpful reviews:

I bought an Enlightened Equipment 20 degree Revelation X quilt after reading their review (among others), and have been exceptionally happy with it.
Looks like you're already assembling some pretty nice gear (I love my ULA Catalyst!).
Have fun!
