I finally used my MYOG silnylon/propore bivy this past week, the last night of a trip in the Emigrant wilderness. What I loved was the warmth it provided (I'm a very cold sleeper), not to mention the star views! But what needs improvement is the moisture control. Around the head in particular, there was loads of condensation inside (clear night, temps around 40 F or just under), because I had it cinched up and was breathing inside the bivy some of the time. There was a little condensation along the silnylon sides, none at all under the propore portion. But the wetness around the head and face inside the silnylon portion there was pretty bad. Of course it was damp on top all over, but that is expected (I wasn't sleeping under a tree or tarp).

I'm thinking I need to make another bivy that works better for me (yes, I could just leave my face outside, but I like the warmth of being inside it sometimes).

Propore is great in its breathability and water resistance, but not all that durable, but would it be good to use all around the head? Given that what I want in a bivy is:

-Something I can sleep out in at the trailhead after a drive up in the dark, given that I might have heavy dew or even a little rain

-Something that won't have all that condensation around my head

What fabrics would you recommend for me?

You could make a flap to go over that opening with something like silk so that your breath will still go through but the fabric will warm the air coming in as it is warmed up by the air going out.
I used to do that when I used a silk liner , mostly for the firs half an hour or so but always inside a tent so not as exposed to the elements.

Thanks, Franco – that would be easier (and cheaper) to try than making a whole new bivy out of something else.

Do you use a groundsheet under your bivy? If so, would the propore need to be especially durable? I was thinking just do an all propore bivy. Or maybe a Tyvek bottom, propore sides and top if you didn't use a ground cloth.

I would just use Propore all around the head except directly on the bottom. As long as you're careful, I don't see much of a durability issue there.

Where did you get the Propore?

I got a few yards several years ago from someone on backpacking.net; I think he found it at Walmart, back in the days when they carried silnylon for $1/yard. I traded him some purple silnylon for it :)
