Hello all, I've got a trip to the Sierra coming up in the beginning-mid September. I got the last Shadow Creek trail reservation for my entry day (yay!). Since dogs are allowed in the Ansel Adams Wilderness and Inyo NF, I'll be bringing my pup along since she loves hiking. Here comes the dilemma…

I'll be coming from the coast and taking Tioga Pass. I badly want to camp one night on my way there at Cathedral Lakes, right near Tuolumne Meadows. The problem is that dogs, of course, are not allowed on trails in Yosemite NP. I've checked and there is only one kennel in the area, and it is first come, first serve, and way down in Yosemite Valley. That would be way out of my way and time consuming.

If worse comes to worse, I've even considered doing just a day (really evening) hike out to upper Cathedral Lake. My main reason for wanting to go is to get some sunset photos of Cathedral Peak. But even that would be a long time to keep her crated in Tuolumne Meadows.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. She's been certified as a narcotics detection/ patrol dog, and I'm a full time LE K9 handler, but I think the working dog policy in the NP only applies to on-duty dogs. Besides which, she's not my official partner at work, my male is. So getting her in under the working dog exception is probably not an option. I'm looking for other suggestions.

Unless you have someone who can sit in a campsite in one of the developed campgrounds with the dog, or can find a kennel in Mammoth Lakes, I'm not sure what to offer. The only places in the park you can overnight with a dog are developed campgrounds and paved routes, as I'm sure you know.

A kennel in Mammoth is something I hadn't considered… Mammoth is one of the most dog-friendly towns I've ever been in, so I'm sure they'd have kennels. That would be a lot of extra driving…I'd have to drive all the way to Mammoth, then back to Tuolumne for the night. But it might be worth the peace of mind knowing that she's taken care of. Like I said, even an 8 mile day hike would be a long time to leave her crated.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it some serious thought.

Thanks for the head's up Greg. I'm not sure when you're going, but if your trip is before mine, I'd love to hear back if you find a kennel you like.
