Hi there,

I'm currently carrying for summer:
– pad nightlight sleeping pad R-Value: 2.27
– exped doublemat half: 180cm eva mat (4mm) R-Value: 1.3
Total Weight: 252g
Total R at the upper part: 3.57

Since carrying this is a bit bulky, and depending on terrain not always comfortable to sleep I thought about buying a Neo-Air again (had the old one for quite a while) also for the colder days coming now in fall (winter is a different story).

However, the numbers are for size S: 230 g /3.2

Carrying it alone, the only benefit would be that it is more comfortable. Since this does not protect me at the bottom in terms of isolation I think I would have to carry the eva mat anyway resulting in a total of 4.5R at the top which is already quite a lot.
Then there is the xtherm, which would make it even better for fall/winter.

I'm asking here because I want to stay as modular as possible. Currently focusing on only 3 seasons in the alps (temperatures however can get quite low at night in the alps, depending on elevation of course).

My questions are:

– is the saved weight for a xlite/xtherm worth the missing isolation at the lower part?
– since the neo-airs are a bit of a problem on rocky terrain, do you carry another mat anyway to protect it?
– what would you see as the best addition to what I have?

I'm sure someone here has experience with those mat and can share some insight :)

Thanks,
Christoph

When camping on gravel I protect my cuben groundsheet and Neoair with a 1/8" foam mat and a bit of polycro sheet.
