I'm not really happy with my MLD burn so I'm thinking about selling it and getting a zero as my new day and overnight pack. I have a few questions for the Zero owners out there, specifically the size medium 2.9 ounce hybrid model. I also have a lovely case of tendinitis in my knee which gives ample time for criticizing gear and fantasizing about replacements, which doesn't help.

Anyway – questions:
Is the hybrid cuben material really crinkly? As in does it make noise while you walk? It sounds OCD but I like zoning out and only hearing my breathing, feet and nature.

Does anyone use a GG nightlight sleeping pad with their medium zero? It's my favorite pad and it looks like a tight fit with the medium (29" tall) and the pad (also 29"). I like using the pad to add structure my other frameless packs and transfer some weight to the hips and don't think the pad holster would do this. I'd like to get the roll top closure so I guess that would either help or hinder fitting the pad.

Additions I'm contemplating are:
-Side pockets + mesh back pocket
-Top strap
-Two side straps
-Padded hip belt
-Ice axe loop (hey you never know)
-Roll top closure

Anything essential I'm missing?

Only problem is I hike in running shorts and would miss my hip belt pockets but don't want to pay another $80 for them. #cheapskatecuben?

Are you talking about the GG nightlite torso pad? If so, that thing is only 19" wide and will fit just fine. I use one in a small zero.

I love all of my Zero's, and my Arc Blast. 2 of them are in the hybrid material, and the rest are regular cuben. IMO, none of them crinkle, but then again, I let the contents fill the pack out, so for the most part, there is no loose material to crinkle.

As already noted, the nightlite pad will work just fine inside the pack.

As for the roll top, there are a couple of extra inches added to the collar to allow for enough room to roll it down, but still have the specified amount of interior volume.

I would suggest a haul loop. It is very minimal extra weight, but is nice to have.

The hip belts are only $40 for a pair… not $80. If you like hip belt pockets, I would suggest to go for it. These are nice and huge, and easy to use.

If you like to carry water bottles on your shoulder straps, the should pouches are nice. (Of course, a simpler way is to use a small piece of cord and a mitten hook, but the shoulder pouch also adds a nice little mesh pocket…)

Anyway, I absolutely love my packs… and their customer service is top notch! I hope you enjoy your pack as much as I do mine! :)

I had a Burn and loved its size. I sold it and bought a Prophet and like it, but it is larger than I need for my typical 2-3 night trip. I recently bought a Z Packs Zero in a size small but got it 3" taller with the roll too closure. It is massive in size. Very comparable to the Prophet. I feel a Zero in size medium would be huge. Almost too large for a frameless pack. I remember when I was researching the Zero and comparing it with other MLD packs, the numbers didn't seem to make sense. After having all three packs, my opinion is that the Zero extra small is compeable to the Burn, Zero small is comparable to the Prophet and the Zero medium is compeable to the Exodus. The hybrid material is crinkly at first but tames down over time. The material is awesome. You would really have to have a lot of gear to need a larger pack than the size small.

Thanks Chad – $40 for the pockets isn't so bad I guess…

Andy that's an interesting comparison about the volume – the burn internal pocket is 1500 ci so it makes sense. I don't mind just letting my sleeping bag fluff up to take the extra space but on day hikes it might just get too floppy. I'll have to think it over some more!

Here is a pic for comparison. MLD Prophet on left, Z Packs Zero in middle, and Golite Ion on right. The Ion is about the same size as the Burn. Prophet and Ion both size large, Zero size small with +3" on the roll top closure. If you don't need the space, you can just roll it up a few more times. I actually feel like I could put more stuff in the Zero than the Prophet. The roll top lets you use almost all of the space. Anybody want to buy the Prophet? Zero

Andy I think you've got me sold on the size small roll top. I've been measuring my burn and it looks like the small will be about an inch wider, which should fit my torso pad easier and compress much better with the roll top. When you say 3" with the roll top that's the default roll top, not a custom option right?

The roll top is an option but doesn't cost very much. Joe has done this option several times and knows what you mean when you tell him to add the roll top closure with an additional 3". The inky thing g I do t really like about the Zero is how high up the pack the mesh netting starts. For some reason, it starts about 5-6" from the bottom. It's not really a big deal, but more of a personal preference. I wish it was closer to the bottom.

Just to clarify, last I heard (and as evidenced by my small Zero with a cinch top, and my small Zero with a roll top) the roll top option automatically comes with a couple extra inches to account for the fact that it is rolled down rather than cinched closed, so requesting more length is not necessary. That is, unless you want more interior volume. However, if this is the point, depending on how much extra volume you needed, then maybe the next size Zero would be appropriate…

As for the front mesh pocket, I figure that it is not attached directly to the bottom of the pack to keep the mesh from rubbing when the pack is set on the ground. This will minimize the possibility of the mesh pocket snagging, and tearing. Of course though, the great thing about ZPacks is that if you want it attached farther down the pack, all it takes is an email, and 99% of the time, they will accommodate your needs.

As for size, (of course depending on your specific gear/loads), a size small should be all that one needs for an overnight hike, easily. I generally use mine for trips ranging between 3 – 5 days, depending on the trip of course. For me, I used my size medium Blast (last gen – and the same as the medium Zero pack) for a 7 day hike in the Olympics with no resupplies, and it worked great…

Thanks guys – Chad I've been watching your youtube video's they've helped a lot too!

I think I'll request the mesh to be 2" shorter – the mesh on my burn is 15" vs. the z-packs 16" and has more than enough room for what I use it for. That way I can roll the pack down a bit more.
