Ramona Falls is on the west side of Mt Hood; the PCT runs nearby. It's a popular day hike from Portland. The bridge that was washed out is a temporary one, removed each winter.

Sad. And close to home.
You know, whenever I hear about some upsetting event I have the reflex to think "this wouldn't have happened to me because of X, Y, Z." Can't do that with this one.
Well, you could look at the flooding stream, look at the bridge, and ask yourself how longer it was going to last. If I was going to cross it, I wouldn't be "standing" on the bridge –
I'd be running across it.
I'm sure there was some complacency due to the fact that it was a "constructed" bridge, and he was the last of 24 hikers to cross the bridge.
Had it been winter, and the option was a snow bridge, there probably would have been a lot more caution.
