Buzz Burrell & Andrew Skurka have worked out a fabulous new route, the Wind River High Route. We tried it last week, but got stopped by Bonney Pass, which really is a mountaineer's route (often used for the approach to Gannett Peak), not a hiker route. The "final" route will go a different way, but has yet to be done as a thru-hike. Here's a trip report:

Like the SHR, I imagine the WRHR can have many variations. I guess you could call this one "Wind River Higher Route".

Thanks for the report!

So the intent was to climb Gannett using Gooseneck route in the end and descend Tourist Creek (or the gorge of doom, Wells), correct?

You folks are my heroes, I followed your footsteps in a Tourist Creek ascent 2 years ago and Big Sandy to Green River lakes a year ago. Lower elevations after Middle Fork, then Pole Creek to Wall Lake and over a pass to Island Lake to Titcomb Basin.

I have been thinking on how to add a packraft to the mix…

We planned to go over Bonney then cross the glaciers east of Gannett to intersect the end of the Glacier Trail at Dinwoody Creek, then bounce back up onto the Divide to summit Flagstone Peak and Downs Mountain, then down via No Man's Pass and Goat Flat to the Glacier Trail and out to Trail Lakes TH. In this way we would have tagged the southern (Wind River Pk) and northern (Downs) 13ers in the Range. It also leaves the hiker VERY exposed for quite a ways while going over Flagstone & Downs and then down Goat Flat. You need good weather for this! A different route that avoids Bonney but gets that high, gentle stuff around Downs is pending – stay tuned! (After bailing off Bonney we considered regaining the CD via Pixley Creek, but having been up Tourist and Wells, well, it didn't seem appealing at all.)

Nice work guys. I've only been in the Winds on climbing trips many moons ago, but based on that limited experience the Dixon/Wilson route from last year seemed to leave a bit to be desired in terms of high-ness. Keep it up.
