Anyone cut this off there pack? I haven't found it useful for much and I would rather cut the weight of the zipper and extra fabric. The remaining fabric would be inside out with the coating on the outside. Does this cause a durabilty issue with bushwhacking? Or should I cut the bottom out and find a way to close the hole where the zipper once lived?

I am also considering replacing the orange cord but having trouble finding an alternative that is lighter that will work with linelocs.

Thoughts?

Well, there are problems with removing the pocket, entirely. You can remove the zipper and the inside of the flap. Removing the outside will likely result in some durability issues. This isn't a real problem, though. Since as a cover, it doesn't get a lot o abuse…not like the back, sides and bottom.

Changing out the line locks probably doesn't make much sense. A light piece of 1/2" or 3/8" nylon can be substituted along with a simple snap. But, it will weigh almost as much. You might save a 1/4oz swapping out both of them and the torso strap. Old style was to roll the top and fasten it with velcro. This worked, OK, but not as well as the lineloks. This may save as much as a half ounce on these. Removing the extra fabric will also save some. I only use 2 short compression straps, so, I remove the loops I don't use. On the Murmur, remove the hip belt buckles and simply sew the belt on. I also cut off the redundent 'D" rings. All together you can save about 1.5 to 2oz.

I agree on removing the pocket entirely wouldn't work, I want to remove either the top layer or bottom. The top has more weight with the zipper and logo, but durability of the second layer is a concern. If I remove the bottom I would still want to remove the zipper but I don't have much sewing experience to sew up the hole.

Also, I don't want to remove the linelocs, I think its a brilliant design. I was hoping to replace the ez2c line with something that grips better in the linelocs and also be lighter in weight. I may be dreaming. I was also considering moving the end of the cord to one of the compression loops to shorten the cord but not sure the compression loop would hold.

I realize I won't be losing much weight but I am at a stage where an ounce here and there from various pieces of gear will add up to a significant amount. I also like to customize my gear!

Btw its a gorilla…

Benji, I'd hesitate to expose the "inside out" inner layer of the pocket, as that would expose the PU coating to UV and abrasion, and thus significantly hasten its demise.

550 paracord (from an Army-Navy store) with the core removed works well in the lineloc buckles. Not lighter, but grippier.
