Often times I will be too lazy to set up a tarp and just sleep on my sil nylon tarp as a ground sheet. If it does end up raining or I get dew falling from the sky, the plan is to fold it over me like a bivy.

I have does this with very light rain before.

My question is, if it rains heavily will the water be able to wick through the sil nylon into my sleeping bag?

Sil nylon can absorb water, so yes, it could happen.

some silnylon is more waterproof

regardless, very little will wick through

but, you'll get a lot of condensation

Makes sense. When I fold up the tarp when it's wet I do end up forcing water through it.
However I've never seen the underside of the tarp get wet in the rain.

It may be a good emergency ploy but as others have said, you will wet your bag with condensation.

Grandma Gatewood supposedly did this with a shower curtain while hiking the AT and other long trails. But of course, she used a blanket which wasn't prone to insulation failure due to condensation.

I've slept in a trash bag bivvy wearing all cotton and using a synthetic bag before and survived with no major complaints. :)
