This weekend (and a couple of nights at the end of last week) I made myself a bivy sack for use under my solo tarp that I made a few weeks ago.
I wanted something as light as possible but yet still functional. I used 1.1oz/sq. yd. silicone-nylon for the bathtub floor and I used Argon 67 (0.67 oz./sq. yd nylon) for the waterproof-breathable portion of the top, and lastly I used 0.9 oz./sq.yd. no-see-um mesh for the head part. It has a cone articulated into the mesh panel with a little grosgrain hook for tying off to a mitten hook I installed in the ridgeline of my tarp when i made it. This is to keep the mesh off of your face when you have to zip all the way up.
Anyways, here are some pics of the finished product. The yellow thing inside is my Therm-a-rest air mattress (xlite reg.)
Final weight of the completed bivy is 7.2 oz.
Thanks to all of the people who posted helpful info that made this easier for me! BPL is a great community!
