Hi all,

I need some advice regarding boxers for hiking. So far I've always used cheap cotton boxers (yes, cotton) which, to be honest, I've never had a problem with and have little reason to change. Except for one thing: they really stink after a few days, so I was thinking of trying out some merino ones.

Seemingly in contrast to most people, I prefer a loose, "relaxed", fit. I don't like tightness, don't want a "second skin" feeling, no tight waistband, and no scratchy wool. I just want lightweight and loose fitting boxers. I've never had problems with chafing (so far), though don't typically do super-long days. Obviously one method is to size up (which I do), but the resulting fit is sometimes weird (e.g. comfy around the legs but huge waistband). So what are the loosest and softest boxers out there? Merino ones are expensive so would like to get it right…

Thanks,
Gregory

I find Smartwool boxer briefs to be much more comfortable (for me that means roomier) than say ExOfficios.

Smartwool doesn't last as long as Ibex or Icebreaker. The patagonia boxers, similarly, will last longer, but they're a large percentage nylon for durability.

Ibex D-Luxe boxer is probably your best bet.

I really like my Icebreaker boxer briefs – I'm pretty sure they have the fit you're looking for. I use their 150-wt Everyday boxers, but the 200-wt Anatomica Relaxed Boxers w/ Fly look pretty decent, too. I'm a cheap bastard, and just can't bring myself to spend more than $25 of a pair of undies. Luckily, you can usually find these on sale during the early summer months.
