I'm finally thinking of doing the whole JMT next summer, and I'm looking for a way to see my wife and son half way through. He'll be 2 years old then, so having them hike in 5 miles like MTR isn't an option.
What's the best place for them to visit? Devils post pile? VVR? Mammoth area?
Anyplace have decent cabins or hotels nearby? My wife is not the most rustic person I've met.
Devils Postpile is accessible by car, and there are many lodging options from there out to Mammoth Lakes.
VVR is accessible by car, but VVR is several miles away from the main trail.

VVR is also at the end of a narrow, winding, paved but full of rocks sticking up out of the asphalt road. Cars, trucks towing boats or RVs, and other vehicles make it out there – but it's slow, slow going, and not for the vertigo-inclined. Or for very wide vehicles – the road goes through some narrow spots between granite. I actually prefer driving it in the dark, so I can see oncoming headlamps before we're trying to figure out which vehicle can more easily back into a pullout.
VVR has yurts and cabins, but they put the "rust" in rustic. Mono Hot Springs has cabins without plumbing – but hot springs and a good buffalo burger.
Mammoth area will have better accommodations for those who need running water and AC.
