Anyone using an HMG summit pack as a short trip, low volume / warm weather pack? I tried an gg kumo but wasn't keen on the shoulder strap fit so now am looking at other options. I have a 3400 porter and love the way that pack carries, but am looking for something quite a bit smaller for warm weather and short trips.

Anyone that has been using this as a go to pack able to share your experience? Comfort, carry weight, pros / cons, suggestions, etc.

Thanks.

I'm surprised no summit pack owners have chimed in. No one using this pack?

Hey JP. What version of the summit pack do you have? They have changed it a bit over the past few years. Do you have the newer version with the revised shoulder straps? I've read they make a difference.

Is the hipbelt removable or did you have to cut it off? Is the back panel slightly stiffer than the rest of the pack (ie. to hold its shape a bit)?

It does. Thanks for taking the time to respond and answer questions, JP.

Hey there Wolf's Rain – did you get the Summit?
I'm pretty sure that's my next day/town pack but am looking for recent feedback.
Also, any ideas on any other comparable packs?

Hey Tyler. I did pick up a summit pack off gear swap. I like a lot of things about it, but not sure its going to work for my current needs. What exactly you plan to use it for? It probably would make a great day pack and general around town. I used mine on an overnight backpacking trip. I was carrying a bit more than I needed as I was testing some gear and also wasn't sure how long I'd stay out. I found it a bit uncomfortable towards the end of my hike, but it may have been on the upper end of its weight limit. I haven't tested it yet with a more standard pack out. I decided I want my pack in that size range to be more geared towards running and fastpacking as that is what my short trips will tend to be.

If you've ever used an HMG pack, they have a lot of things going for them. I love their simplicity for packing and the roll top / compression system is my favorite (I have a 3400 porter). I prefer their 150d fabric as its pretty bomber.

Let me know if you have any questions. I may load mine up with my standard kit just to see what I think.

Ahhh – thanks for the feedback! I've got a 4400 porter for packrafting & epic adventuring – it is the bee's knees; HMG has my thumbs way up. I'm looking for a smaller daypack in the 30L-ish range that's as UL as possible. I have an REI Flash 18 I grabbed on sale that's been working for mini outings but want something a leetle bit bigger. But I want to keep it lean+mean for maneuvering and hot temps. I do a lot of beach & coastal hiking/frolicking so something that's waterproof & light is ideal. I'm pretty certain about cuben but I'm not really crazy about Zpack's selection; but, they may be more comfortable than they look. I've noticed many folks mention that the Summit is a tad too small on several occasions. I doubt I would use this overnight; I'd probably take the 4400 & cinch down. Any other contenders you've come across?
