I need to cut some out of my layering system for the top half of me. Right now I am using a thin 50 poly/50 cotton shirt to sleep in and as a second shirt, a thin mixed fiber long sleeve dress shirt for the sun and bugs, a hooded wind shirt, a poncho/tarp and a Patagonia R2 for when it is cold. Where can I reduce or merge? I am not going with a poly shirt because of the stink nor a merino one because of the price nor a wpb jacket. Thanks.

The Rab Ventus might be a good piece in place of the windshirt and the R1.
It won't be quite as warm as your R1, but with the poncho and your dress shirt, you can probably push the range just about as far. I don't see a significant difference in the conditions that favor R1 over a thin softshell-style windshirt.
My Rab windshirt is like… 8oz total.
Can't you just use the windshirt for sun and bugs and drop the secondary long sleeve shirt?
It is actually an R2 because it does get pretty chilly around here. The breathability on them is nice and the range is much extended with a shell. I have not had much luck with softshells. For me they mainly act like with VBLs with little insulation.
I wish I could use the wind jacket as a bug/sun shirt but I haven’t found one that fits my XLT self that breathes and/or comes in a light color so I can wear it when it above 85F, sunny and humid out. If anything I would probably cut the windshirt and use the poncho in place of the windshirt. Even an older Houdini in the Citrus could barely do it.
Maybe cut the sleep shirt also.
Actually maybe a long sleeve power dry shirt in a light color for the sleep shirt and the dress shirt.
