I would like to try out the whole 100wt micro pile fleece and a wind jacket thing people use for light rain. I don’t think many places make micropile fleece any more but it is still difficult even trying to find a 100wt fleece jacket with a hood, not a pull over. All I can find is under armor stuff which is a bit pricey. Any suggestions?

I found that Marmot makes the Reactor Hoody also so there is that possibility. Couldn't find anything else though.

Also, look for a Power Stretch Hoody. It's a different Polartec fleece. About the same weight as Polartec 100 microfleece, but stretchy with a smooth woven exterior. Really nice stuff.

A windshirt will wet through pretty quick. They are okay for little fits of misty stuff. You asked about 100w pile, which is different than a 100w polarfleece.

Regardless of the fleece type, you will get pretty hot hocking with the fleece and windshirt. A thicker base layer would be the way to go. I've worn a vest under a rain shell with light effort and was plenty warm— and had to stow the vest once I started uphill again.

Vests are lighter, stow smaller and cost less, yet they give some core warmth and keep cold shell fabric off your body. I find that my long sleeve base layer is good enough for my arms until I need to break out more insulation for rest stops or camp.

Finding 100w stuff in full zip with a hood is difficult. Pullovers maybe; full zip hoodless, yes; vests yes. I don't think you get much for the weight with plain 100w fleece.

A cap4 hoodie would be my choice– $120 aside

MEC has the deal on the T2 pullover/zip hoodies http://www.mec.ca/product/5034-434/mec-t2-zip-hoodie-mens/?bc=

Other variations:

LL Bean has a Power Stretch hoodie: http://m.llbean.com/product.html#80955

If you can use a beanie rather than a hood, Cabelas has the TNF TKA100 fleece full zip for $49 http://www.cabelas.com/product/The-North-Face-reg-Flash-Dry-RDT-Fleece-Full-Zip-Jacket/1809842.uts?

The Lands End Aircore fleece tops are a great buy on sale. In a few weeks the back to school stuff will be going full tilt and the liquidators like Ross and TJ Max will be dragging out the winter stuff. You might find deals there. A regular search on eBay might find the combo you want.
