Having seen the pain points on these forums regarding the cost of Cuben, I have been waiting of the patent to expire (2012?) and some textile mill in China to jump in and drive the price way down.

I stubbled upon this: http://www.alibaba.com/showroom/cuben-fiber-fabric.html

Knowing nothing more than I have Cuben gear envy. And have had some bad (and good) experiences with knock offs from that part of the planet: Does anyone know anything about his or even how to asses it?

I have written for a sample (even willing to buy a yard ..er.. meter or three ) .

If I had the sewing skills to make my own packs and pouches, I would give them a try. Prices aren't prohibitive… and in any case, you aren't using these unknowns to make parachutes, right?

I think the cost per yard (meter) is wonderful. But the minimum order is really big. Like 100 meters.

Im posting here looking for guidance from anyone and perhaps letting the manufacturer know that if we can determine the stuff is good for tents and packs: they have a market.

Ill post any progress.

Out of interest I followed the link.

I must be missing something obvious but I couldn't see any Cuben fibre productthat would be useful to a BPL member?

I could only see 2 products – one had a PTFE coating and the minimum weight was 140g/sqm (4.25oz/sq yd), the other fabric (labelled'wear resisting')had a minimum weight of 80 g/sqm (2.4oz/sq yd). Neither looked like Cuben Fibre as we know it.
