Klymit Motion 35 Pack — big flaw

So I just got a Klymit Motion 35 pack, size S/M. I was very excited because it's got a bit more room than my Osprey Hornet 32 (30L) which should make it perfect for a lot of trips.

BUT — and this is a big BUT — the included inflatable Air Beam Frame Sheet is too damned big for this pack!! It's like they made the S/M size in this pack was an afterthought. The AirBeam is too tall — the pocket it's supposed to fit into laughably has a velcro flap that in no way can be closed, the pack tapers a bit at the top, so when you stuff the Air Beam in to try to get it to fit lengthwise, it folds up like an accordion. It also increases the torso height to the point that my head hits the back of the pack and I hate that. So disappointing. (The pack specs for size S/M is 16-20" torso; the Air Beam is 24" tall!).

I'm on the fence about returning it, as I can probably use it for lighter loads just fine without the Air Beam. But I occasionally need to carry a lot of water, which is why I wanted the higher load rating (35 lb) of this pack.

This is my first experience with an Air Beam, so maybe I'm missing something. Any suggestions?Klymit Motion 35 pack w/Air Beam Frame SheetKlymit Motion 35 pack w/Air Beam Frame Sheet

have you tried folding it with less air to see if it will fit? certainly a design issue however that might make it fit better. I've used a folded up partially inflated neoair in my ULA Ohm and it took some trial and error to find the right folding and the right amount of air to put in so it rode comfortably.

Yes, I can fold it, but then it bulges out at the top or bottom (depending on which end gets folded), taking up space (which irks me…I don't like giving up pack real estate).

And it still "accordions" because the pocket isn't really wide enough for it. They just seem to have generally downscaled this pack from the large size, without taking the Air Beam into account at all.

What's funny is that even the photo on the hang tag shows the Air Beam sticking out! Klymit Motion 35 pack w/Air Beam Frame Sheet hang tag

Thanks, Joshua, that was very helpful! They are still off on their measurements — he says that there is 2-2.5 inches of overlap in size S/M. It's 3.5 inches.

It does seem to work better with the "horns" sticking out of the pocket — that solves the accordion issue. :-) Would be nice if they included that info *with* the pack!

I'll load 'er up this weekend and see how it hauls. Again, thank you.

FWIW, I instantly hated the airbeam on my 65 and just immediately pulled it out and tossed it in the closet. I have my xlite regular and a foam pad folded up in there and it works great. IMHO UL gear should not have and "inflato-bulb" permanently attached – not unless you can fold that sucker into a working BP cuff for multipurpose. :-)

Yeah, I'm not in love with the bulb, both because of weight & I'm an RN…it feels like work to me! The bulb does come off, but then it still needs to be packed if you want to inflate/deflate. Or maybe someone here has come up with a good Air Beam hack to eliminate the whole bulb apparatus?

I tried folding up my Exped Synmat UL 7, but it didn't seem to work all that well, the material is too soft & floppy. The Xlites are a bit stiffer. I don't carry any foam, just a piece of reflectix as a sit pad. I may try that in there.

Yeah, I lucked out with my pad system – if I fold it tight and full deflated, I can just cram it in there. It is fairly stiff, but I really want my custom bent Al stay to wrap around my back. The thing is, unless you remove the Al stay, all the the inflatable is doing is padding. Its pretty nice to be able to adjust this, but unless you are getting poked I may be unnecessary, and it wouldn't add support for the load. The Al stay should handle it all.

You could try to leave a bit of air in your sleep pad and see if that is better.

I did try the mat with some air — it wasn't enough & what would have been enough to provide some stiffness made the folded pad too thick. Oh well — these things are never quite perfect. Maybe I'll love the Air Beam after I see how it does with a full load.

If it could come out during the day fully packed it might make a nice sit pad. Too bad.

I like my 65 pretty well and will be using it on the JMT in a week, mostly because of the 10 day leg. It doesn't look too bad, but I'm sure would like a different color. But it is silicone impregnated material, so no dyeing. Maybe it will grow on me. I added a noseeum type mesh bag on the back, under the bungee, for drying things. The only feature I thought it was missing. With me, if an item is not tied on in some way it is lost by day 3.

Agreed re color — I'm not big on all the white. But the price point was excellent, so if it ends up working out, I think I can live with it. :-)

I can see why white is worn by the 101st Airborne Division, because they fight in the winter, but I have generally been avoiding white gear to be less of a visual nuisance in summer and to show dirt less.

But I've recently been counted mosquitos on companions wearing different colors and lighter colors consistently attract fewer mosquitos.

Food for thought so you don't become food for bugs.

FWIW, I ordered the airbeam that Granite Gear sells for the Crown VC 60 (which I absolutely love) thinking it might bump the capacity up enough that I could get rid of my heavier load pack. No matter what I did the airbeam simply did not fit nicely, bunching and folding and popping out just as you experienced. And when I finally got it installed such that it worked I HATED the way it made the pack fit.

Luckily I ordered it from REI and simply returned it. Still love my Crown VC with the std "flexi" plastic sheet.
Pretty sure I'm done with air beam suspensions until I hear some universal glowing reviews.

"lighter colors consistently attract fewer mosquitos"

On the other hand according to Ryan Jordan I should look dead sexy in a white pack (or does that only work for ALL white? Only for narcissistic attraction?) so maybe I will be MORE attractive in some ways.

At least it will be a bit different as white seems pretty uncommon.

I bought this pack because I really like the way their pad works in my GG Mariposa. I agree the pad seems to be rather big but after getting it in and inflated it seems to work just fine. Last weekend we did a quick 10 miler with the pack at 24 lbs and the pack worked great.
