Anyone had a SD Lightning 2 in the field, preferably while it’s been raining? Found a deal on one and am considering it as an option for wet UK conditions.

Looking for firsthand experience regarding:
– weatherproofness and condensation; that strip of hybrid fly at the top seems like it might steam up. I also don’t see how the single wall at the awning end is vastly different than Nemo’s notoriously condensation-compromised fly cutouts.
– Splashback; is the low bathtub problematic at the fly corners on hard ground?

We work overtime at NewtsCo to save you typing:
– yes, I searched for threads. SD compounds the difficulty of the hella-suck BPL search function by naming every third tent for the past 10 years ‘Lightning’ or ‘Flash’. Mike Glavin, if you’re lurking, I’m all for honoring heritage but bold new names to go with bold new designs!
– yes, I know pop-up tents are the embodiment of evil and I should get a tarp or a hilleberg or X thing you like.
– yes, I know it’s a pound five heavy vs my current fly creek UL2. The dry pitch might be worth the weight for me.

Tanti grazie!

I have used the non freestanding version – the Flashlight UL2 a couple of times. The awning works very well and the unique gear storage is one of those, why didn't I think of that. Minimal condensation as the ventilation is possibly the best that I have ever used in a single walled tent. Quality is excellent.

This gets used with another person.

Dave, good to hear from you. When you say, 'minimal condensation' — how much, in what areas, under what temp drop? I don't mind giving certain panels a wipe with a packtowl; I do mind getting dripped on. The SD Mojo, gorgeous but ill-conceived, had a lot of online reviews concluding with a perky 'only had condensation at the foot end!' Eye roll.

The Flashlight 2 looks like a much, much better thought-out Nemo Meta, which I had briefly and was a condensation factory.

I was in a Lightning 2 (there is no Lightning 3) for 24 hours in which it rained fairly constantly, had no problems with condensation or leakage.

Hi Will,

the ventilation is really quite good. The I had a tiny bit of condensation at the top of the canopy but that is far from my head (given the tall 'sit up' height). None at the sides and none at the foot end (there is a vent there). Temps dropped from about 18C to 3C with some rain overnight. The tent was set up on dry ground. I was able to leave the side doors open at the top to help with the ventilation and the awnings worked as advertised.

The tent itself is a bit 'overbuilt' in comparison to most UL cottage products but it has to be sold to a wider range of consumers. So it is a little heavy. But the quality is certainly there.

As an owner of the current Flashlight 2, I'll toss in my 2 cents as well. I've only had mine out in rain once so far but it was a pretty good storm. We got hit in the night with a few hours of a good New Mexico Monsoon. I didn't want to worry about the wind gusting and blowing rain in under the awning during the night, so we zipped the windows to their highest point. Never had a drop enter the tent. If you ran your hand along the ceiling you could feel it was damp but couldn't see water droplets of any size. 4-5 hours in a monsoon rain and that little condensation, that's some pretty great ventilation.
