Made the transition to trailrunners last year and love it. However, the dirt and debris that accumulates in my shoes, coming in over the top, is a real bummer. Shorty gaiters are the obvious solution, but they make my ankles sweat and seem to defeat some of the breathability advantages of my Hardrocks. Anyone have any creative solutions?

Maybe an Inov-8 Debris Sock? They make ’em in coolmax or merino…
It seems a waste to permanently attach a gaiter to a sock that may not last. I may try this…
1. take old sock and cut off 5-6" portion that goes over lower leg; or use stretchy fabric.
2. stick or sew three dots of velcro on one end.
3. glue velcro on medial, lateral, and back heel of shoe.

In Australia we wear gaiters all the time, partly for keeping rocks and sticks out. They work well. Yes, we know about the breathability problem.
The solution is to use gaiters which are breathable. This means UNcoated fabric. I suggest something like a 500 denier Cordura fabric: it breathes quite well and is very tough. Only trouble is you may not be able to buy them. OK, so make a pair for yourself and try them out.
Cheers
Aren’t Dirty Girl Gaiters non-coated?
