Picked up an Mei Voyageur on ebay in preparation for a New Zealand trip. As it is rather wet over there I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions on dealing with the rain with a panel loader other than a pack cover?

In one sense, there's no difference between top and panel loaders–you can't waterproof either one. A pack cover helps with moderate rain, but you'd better have your bedding and camp clothes waterproofed inside the pack. I prefer to keep them in a separate dry bag (either a garbage bag or turkey bag or, lately, the Schnozzel that goes with my air mattress), and that would work fine with a panel loader. Some people prefer a whole-pack liner (e.g., trash compactor bag), but that would cause a problem with a panel loader.

If you really want it waterproof, put a drybag inside. Otherwise drybag the vital stuff and use a pack cover.
