Getting my gear sorted for the mayhem of the SHR.

As usual, I am going at in (or at least trying) SUL style.
In the eyes of most it is more like Stupid Light Style.

Attempting to get from the start at Roads End/ HWY 180 to Reds Meadow in under 6 days and a starting pack weight of less than 20 pounds.
With a 2 pound pack and a 2 pound bear canister, it doesn't leave much room.
I would love to say this is easy with 1.75 pounds of food a day, but that is not happening.
We will be hiking from first to last light and even possibly a little at night if on trail.

It takes calories to make this happen. With experience I know I will eat a little more than 2 pounds a day.

So 12 pounds of food plus the pack and canister make 16 pounds.
4 pounds left for base (minus the pack).

I have done this before a few times on the JMT, but this is the SHR. That frightens me.

Here is clothing that I'm bringing that I won't be wearing all the time.

Are you bringing a rain jacket this time?
I know you can hike hard on a trail and keep warm without one, but think about being stuck up on a tricky pass that you have to move slowly and carefully to get down, don't want to rush.
I encountered a nasty storm yesterday in which I couldn't keep warm enough wearing shorts, a polyester long sleeve, and a rain jacket.
But really you have a lot more experience in the sierras than me.

If you can pull off 6 days that will be really impressive!

Awesome, mucho respect. Have a great trip!

SHR…if that's not on my bucket list, I don't know what is.

BTW, we met last year at Whitney Portal–just after I finished my JMT hike, and just before you started.

I enjoyed the TR from that–looking forward to hearing about this!

Adam, yep, good french fries
Thanks

Justin,
Jacket is fleece lined with a nylon shell.
Does that count?

Hi Aaron,

The SHR is one of my favorite hikes. Andrew and I took 7.5 days to get from Road's End to Red's Meadow.

Have fun out there and most importantly stay safe. It is a wonderful hike with gorgeous views of the Sierra.

Hey Aaron,
The SHR is great – I think you will like it. And, I don't think you'll have any problem to get to Reds under 6 days. Flyin' Brian and I got there mid-morning of our 6th day and never walked a step in the dark. Our days were like 10+ to maybe 14 hours, and we even did a 1/2 day side hike up Mt Conness because we got ahead of our 9.5 day plan. My starting pack weight was more like 26lbs, and like you I budget 2lbs food per day. I remember carrying a little too much water at the start – there was some running up there somewhere if I recall correctly (this was late July – early Aug 2013). Anyway, while I understand the desire to go as light as possible, and that is really helpful with all the rock hopping, for what you're trying to do I wouldn't limit myself unnecessarily to 20 lbs. in addition to the clothing you show I had rain pants and some very light tights (which I mostly wore at night due to a not-warm sleeping bag) – that's maybe 8oz more.

Stoopid bear can!
Have fun!

Hey Perter,
Thanks, I've added a few things although only 3 ounces, it is still more than enough.
I kind of dig the JMT as you can easily hike it legally without the bear can.

Aaron you are my hero! One of these days I'll do a hike like that – as I recover from a myriad of things weighing me down I'm trying to get back to long distance trail running…and your fast-n-light style is my motivation!

One of these days I'll be able to follow in your footsteps……

Can't wait to read your trip report!
