I am planning a trip where the best TH would be Leavitt Lake. I had thought the road to it was a USFS road but looks like it is designated a jeep trail. According to the map it crosses two streams.

I have a high clearance AWD SUV with all weather tires. Has anybody been on this road this season or last that can report on its condition? I don't really want to buy off terrain tires this season.

Thanks
Bruce

I travelled that road last year. Reported on it here on BPL, I think.

I drove my 2002 Acura MDX, for reference.

The stream crossings were not the problem. The first (early on) was bumpy, but not terribly difficult so long as you picked the right line; looked worse than it was. That could change, year to year (it was slightly worse shape last year vs the year before). The second crossing has more water, but is much smoother.

The worst bit was a severely rutted section with a high rock in the road and a tree near the road that limited maneuverability. I had to make two attempts, scraped bottom, and was really worried about ending up on top of that rock with all four tires in mid-air. The return wasn't nearly as nerve-wracking, probably because I had sufficient momentum/speed going downhill that I didn't have time to worry about it.

There were a couple jeeps and pickups at the lake.

Maybe it was graded this year and it will be smooth sailing. Worst case, park and walk the rest of the way up?

If you have an issue on that road it will be clearance not traction. Most years you'd have no problem. I haven't been up there this year but if I were you I'd expect to make it just fine, and be prepared to walk it just in case.

I took a quick detour up Leavitt Lk road last weekend as I drove by on my way to Tioga Pass.

The road was in the same condition as I recall from last year. I only went to the first stream crossing (about 1mile). There were some good sized potholes. Be careful if they are filled with water. One would have been quite the jolt if taken too fast.

The stream crossing would be no problem. The climb up the other side had a smooth track worn on the right to avoid a large rut and big rocks.

There were large storms up there last weekend so conditions may change. I saw lots of gravel washed across 108 on both sides of the pass.

Please report back if you go further up the road. I might like to go up to the lake to try fishing later this season.
