Im currently in the market to buy a tarp/tent that would be able to hold my girlfriend and I and a dog in stormy weather. I've never owned a 2 person shelter before so I figured I would post here and get some advice. Here are some criteria for the tent:

-needs to be supported by trekking poles
-under ~20oz
-would prefer to not have a pole between the sides (ie duomid)
-don't really want to spend more than about $250

I have done quite a bit of research and so far I have come up with:

-Bear Paw Bears Den
-Zpacks twin hexamid
-Six moon designs haven

I would prefer if the tarp was cuben but I'm having a hard time fitting that preference into the cost. Any advice or experience?

HI. Rule number one then is buy a 3-person shelter, NOT one labeled as 2-person. Anything labeled as 2-person will strictly be sardine-style.

You should at least add the MLD Trailstar as a possibility. Dog friendly very adaptable and would be roomy for 2. One pole in center though.

I have a Hexamid Twin and it's too small for your criteria unless your dog is VERY small. I think the Bears Den will be too small as well, though I have no personal experience with it.

How big is your dog? Have you looked at the ZPacks Triplex? You can get it as just a tarp or with the floor too, but it is more than your price limit.

I think all the shelters you listed are too small for 2 people and a dog.

Edit: do you want a tarp that is fully enclosed? If you don't care about bugs, you could try a large flat tarp to meet your budget

Another edit: Tarptent sells the fly only of their Stratosphire 2. 25oz and $210, should be big enough

Look at Tarptent's Stratospire 2. It has two doors/vestibules and plenty of room.

Your dog could stay in one of the vestibules. Of course you'd have to get the dog's permission for this rudeness.

BTW, Marco Botsaris' comment that "Anything labeled as 2-peson will be strictly sardine style." does not apply with the Stratosopire.

OK, the price of the Stratospire 2 is above your stated limit but the versatility of this tent makes it well worth it. You can pitch it as a tarp, without the inner tent or get a ripstop inner and use it for 4 season camping.

Another vote for the Stratospire 2. After a BA Fly Creek 2, my wife and I refer to our SS2 as the Taj Mahal.
