Your favorite shorts to hike in during the summer in stifling heat and humidity?

Adidas running shorts with a built in liner. They're short enough that people have made fun of me in them, which means they're also really nice and breezy. Less than $5 at a thrift store.

Technically, since the liner is the lowest layer I wear, that means I got underwear at a thrift store. And I haven't broken out in anything! Max, if you want to use that as a testimonial, you're welcome to it.

Marmot Cruz, and the outlet version of Eddie Bauer/First Ascent Guide shorts. Actually the shorts look more like EB Horizons while the pants are modeled after the FA Guide pants.
Also use, and very much like, the pants version of both, though the Eddie Bauers' sewn on waistband button requires replacement or better thread in short order.

I'd really rather use some of my athletic shorts, but I do a lot of scrambling, so those probably wouldn't survive a single use.

Ditto on the Marmot Cruz shorts (and long pants). Both get regular use in the summer. My favorite hiking shorts are the REI Venturi shorts.

They are made of unlined 4-way stretch softshell fabric, a little lighter version of the Marmot Scree pant fabric. The stretch is great for scrambling and they are durable enough for sliding around on rocks. Plenty of pockets.

LLBean makes a similar pair (Cresta Hiker shorts) with similarly stretchy fabric. I like the REI shorts better, but the LLBEAN version is fine. I haven’t seen similar shorts from other brands.

10 dollar Starter shorts from wal-mart, with exofficio boxers underneath.

I only use pre-owned shorts, on principle.

In all seriousness, Mountain Hardwear Refueler with the liner cut out to save weight. Like 3oz.

+1 on the Brooks running shorts with the boxerbrief liner. I sweat like a pig, and in addition to these being light, the design helps immensely with chaffing.

Whatever Mountain Hardwear has with the chamois like lining in the waist. Ex Officio Nio Amphi shorts are good (they dropped the liner).

I'm liking the Columbia Silver Ridge shorts for general hot weather wear. Columbia doesn't usally make me do backflips, but I like the fabric a lot. It feels dry and doesn't cling. They make long inseams too. The pants are as good, so you can just get the zip-offs. No ankle zips on the ones I have.

I don't get it. What is the liner for? Keep your junk hidden? Is it supposed to wick away sweat? I have a pair of older ExOfficio Amphi shorts and I snipped it out. They are long enough to keep my goodies private, and allow some air conditioning. Am I missing something?

I bring one pair of lowers…convertibles. One pair of underwear too. Unless I had some of Max's underoos. Those would be worth having an extra set.

+1 for REI Venturi

The stretchy, light-enough, tough-enough material, the pockets, the flat lined waist band and also the length, which doesn't go over the knee. I hate that binding feeling around the knees with longer shorts when having to high-step while scrambling.

I'm sure it is a very personal thing, but when I run, walk, hike, or any sort of continuous and repetitive motion, I sweat profusely, and unless things are cinched down a bit, the result can be painful chaffing….maybe not in one or two days, but over time. The liner minimizes this problem. I have also used the athletic tights that Target sells (Champion) to achieve the same result.

I had a hiking buddy several years ago that experienced the same thing. He could barely take a step without severe pain and was forced to take two days off of a week-long trip, and only by using some compression tights was he able to return to the hike.

If you don't understand "why" consider yourself fortunate!

Do you wear underwear? Because I wear shorts with a liner instead of underwear. Also, these are running shorts, not cargo shorts, although I do wear the ones with a longer 7" inseam.

No underwear for me!!!

At least while I'm hiking. No liner, either. I get stinky and sweaty like anybody else, but no weird chafing or rubbing. I sometimes wear Patagonia nine trail (??) shorts. They are stretchy and have mesh vents on the outside and between the legs. Quite comfy!

No underwear… the liner serves the same purpose. I think for me, the less seams you have anywhere near your joints, the better. Less to cause a problem. The Brooks liner does have seams, however, it forms a fairly smooth transition away from the problem areas.
