I have only tried 1..I forget which one but it was coated with chocolate. Very delicious indeed but it would definitely not do well on trail in summer. It would melt and be a gooey mess. I suppose the mint chocolate would do the same. Any thoughts about the other flavors? Do they all have some coating that would melt in the summer heat? I do like the chocolate brownie cliff bars..those taste good and work well in the heat of summer sitting in my pack.

No. In fact, out of the hundreds I have bought I don't recall a single chocolate coated one. Maybe try a different store.

You probably tried the Core bar. The Meal bars are not covered in chocolate. They make Cliff bars taste like sawdust.
Ahhh yes..that was it. It was core. Ok. Thanks.
So I found pro bar meal bars at whole foods. I tried 2 of them..chocolate coconut and the other one I forget what it was. .it was all different seeds, nuts and cranberries..wow..they were both delicious. I am going to go back this weekend and buy a few of them for my little trip next weekend. They will for sure make a good breakfast with protein shake and also compliment part of my lunch. Thanks again BPL for leading me in the right direction
If you're going to Whole Foods, look for Rise bars. Very tasty, and minimal ingredients, which I appreciate. They have protein bars and energy bars for different needs.
I just got back from a trip where we took Pro Meal bars (non-chocolaty) and Pro Core bars (chocolaty) and definitely had some hot temperatures, particularly in the car and in the bear lockers. The Pro Core bars held up and did not become messy. That's in contrast to some actual chocolate bars which were gooey messes.

Hey the PROBAR Core are pretty dang good! I wrote a review of them early last year in which I talked about the melting issue because of the chocolate coating. Very much an issue in warmer locations. I got some photos on there for folks that have not seen them and want to see what they look like.
These days I tend to prefer the PROBAR Fuel bars.
Last year (2013) I went through 14 boxes of MEAL bars and 26 boxes of FUEL bars and only one box of the Core bars.
I think the main reason for that is what I wrote in my review of them:
I think we have to be realistic here and say that a day hiker, or weekend hiker, is simply never going to need these bars (sorry folks at PROBAR). The facts are simple… your body is likely never going to burn through so much protein, as a day/weekend hiker, that you need to specifically buy bars that are targeted at high protein levels.
However, for long distance hikers that might have long stretches between trail towns and not be able to get into a trail town that has a place to eat and hoard up buggers and stakes and all those other wonderful things meat eaters consume to make up for lost calories and protein while out on the trail, well, I think that this is where a high protein bar comes into place.
Even though I spent a lot of days out on the trail last year I just did not seem to find that I needed them (ie: the extra protein they provided) as I was able to obtain enough from my main meals. I also prefer to hike with food that is not hard so my body can process it easier (and thereby not burn as much energy doing so) and the Core bars are pretty dang hard compared to most other bars out there.
Anyway, I do like the flavor of the Core bars… the oatmeal ones are sweet for the morning and the one box I bought was all oatmeal flavor.
