Everybody likes to count grams and ounces, and try to get to the lightest pack possible. I love ultralight, and keep a BPW of about 10 lbs. However, I also like my luxuries. Here's something I've done so I can enjoy some of the "normal" camping luxuries, at an ultralight weight. What have you done?

Love the photo, but I know there's no way you would eat those after roasting them over an Esbit…Grim!

Do they get that black residue gunk like the bottom of my cup?

Gives them a special flavor. I bet I could sell it to some upscale "deconstructionist" restaurant, and rich people would pay $100/plate for it.

No, seriously: (From Wikipedia) Esbit's Material Safety Data Sheet states combustion can create formaldehyde, ammonia, nitrogen oxide, hydrogen cyanide and ingestion may cause nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal disturbances, and kidney damage. [1] When burned, the chemical oxidation of the fuel yields noxious fumes, requiring foods being cooked to be contained in a receptacle such as a pot or pan, and burned tablets will leave a sticky dark residue on the bottom of pots.

Perhaps my tongue-in-cheekness didn't come through as well as I thought. If one were to look closely, one could see that the esbit in this photo isn't even lit. Thanks for the heads up, though. I will watch for nausea & vomiting and death after eating 300 miniature marshmallows toasted two at a time on toothpicks over 10 esbit tablets.

I got ya, Heather!

I thought it was funny too.

Mmmmmm….Essssssbit

Thanks Todd! Esbit has a certain…Je ne sais quoi………Smoke meets acid with notes of skunk and toe cheese, and finishes with a hint of carb cleaner.

Where are the graham crackers and Hershey bars? A marshmallow isn't a marshmallow without the other two s'more ingredients!

I agree, leave the esbit out of the recipe! But as a grandmother, I know how important these items (minus esbit) are to the younger set!

"Perhaps my tongue-in-cheekness didn't come through as well as I thought."

I'm old. I'm dense. I missed it completely. I admit it.

Now I'm nauseous……

Well done. :-)

I dunno – that tray has weight, and so do the toothpicks.
Rock and a twig?
And bigger marshmallows!

Cheers

I think everybody think has a different level of necessity meaning one person's necessity can be another's luxury.

My luxury;
1.taking a bit of black zambucca on our short trips
2.my roll of 10mm foam (150g) to sit down on in camp. I don't like transferring too much crap into my shelter
3.my TT rainbow…love a fully enclosed closure that is big enough for me (194cm tall) with room to move.
4.always have taken a towel (mine is 600×300 and weighs 10g) but have NEVER used it.
5.a 250g packet of marshmallows…..

1.5 or 1.3 ounce Monkey Pillow

https://www.etsy.com/shop/HikeBikeDale

Used it for the 1st time on a weekend trip.

Soooo much nicer than using a sweaty stuff sack or putting my shoes under my head.

Fuzzy, warm and soft and serves as a stuff bag for my Montbell jacket and other clothing bits.

The other luxury that I have are Goosefeet 2.0 to 3.0 ounce down booties to make sure my feet are warm, which helps ensure that I get a good night sleep in the shoulder seasons.

Hah! For Tony a 1.5 oz pillow is a luxury. I'm ashamed to admit that my WM Cloudrest weighs in around 4.1 oz. I've been searching for a better solution, but nothing beats a down pillow for comfort. I may consider having Ben from Goosefeet making me a new lighter down pillow, but I hate to throw away my WM pillow just to save 1.5 oz or so.
