Do you have experience with their gear, and or, the reliability of their tents and tarps?

I have a Borah Gear Cuben bottom/M90 side zip custom XXlong (I am 6ft5) and wide as I like the room to move around. Awesome Bivy, Super light at just over 6 oz and John is great to work with. He has always been very helpful and responds well to emails. I played 50 questions while figuring out exactly what I needed in a bivy and what i ended up with was spot on. I used the bivy last year under a YMG Cirraform on the JMT

YMMV

+1 on a borah tarp n bivy. I have the 9×9 silnylon tarp and chest zip bivy in DWR. Bought the latter used. Tarp with custom tie outs was $125, bivy was about $50. Don't forget the kelty triptease, 8 x Ruta Locura CF stakes and 6 x Ti shepherd's hook stakes ( zpacks).

Pic is from San Rafael Wilderness this past AprilTarp setup: BG 9x9 silnylon

"six moon designs Deschutes or gatewood cape and leave the bivy at home"

I agree with this so long as you are sure there are no skeeters, in which case bring the Borah bivy.

I usually bring them both and use just the bivy, only setting up the Gatewood when it rains.
