Hey all. I'm planning on doing a trip (CT sections 6-7, maybe 8 & 9 if the snow has melted enough) in a few days that promises to still have some snowpack on the trails. My hiking shoes are NB WT210G2's. I got a pair of Microspikes in size M, and tried them on today. I've never used anything like this before, and I noticed that even with a lot of adjusting, there was still some slack (enough to freely wiggle the chains) in the two side-chains that come from the heel-most set of spikes. Is this normal? I will probably only need these for some short-ish (3-4 1/2-1mi sections?) sections-even if this fit isn't normal, will it be ok for this kind of use? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Mine fit like piano strings–no slack at all.
Was the rubber band around the outside tight?
Sometimes you have to kind of pull on them a little. Adjust. Wiggle around. Get them to be tight. Walk on them a little and then re-adjust.
The chains should all be quite tight.
"My hiking shoes are NB WT210G2's."
What size?
10D women's. I think part of the problem is that the soles aren't very stiff, so the band pulls the toe upward and creates slack. I tried pulling the band up and around and whatnot, but couldn't seem to get them quite tight. I don't have time to get another pair…I might "adjust" them by using zip-ties through the links, shorten them a bit.
Unless they are "industrial rated" Zip ties will break.
Look at the chains connected to "cleats". There is a connector link at the cleat, and then twisted oval links going to the "elastic". The oval links have a split in them. They are not welded.
Use a couple of needle nose pliers to twist one open, remove it, twist the next one open, insert the adjacent link, and squeeze it shut with "regular" pliers.
I removed one link from each of the back sides of the heal cleat for a better placement, which you want, especially for going down hill. If there is little to nothing under your heal strike, your foot has a good chance sliding out.
MYOG, HYOH, YMMV, and all of that….
Maybe walk around in the grass. On a steep slope. See if you can get them to work good there where you have access to things like pliers. Out in the wilderness it will be harder to fix them.
Thanks for the tip, Greg. I can do that easily. Thanks to all for your input!
Make sure the spikes dont rotate on you when yr walking, that is your hoe isnt rotating in the rubber holder … In a bad case if can totally slip around
If they do its too loose or the wrong shoe for it
Rotating in those spikes can be dangerous
;)
I am a Women's 9.5 and have the size medium microspikes. they fit snug on my hiking boots, on my sportiva trail runners they are a bit loose, but that has never given me any trouble. I'd say as long as they are not slipping off your feet you would be ok.
