How does 0.74 cuben fiber compare in strength and abrasion resistance to 1.35 Silnylon? How is the cuben holding up long term? Thanks,

While not testing .74oz cuben fiber specifically, this video should answer your question:

There are all kinds of "strengths". This test doesn't effectively test most of them – tensile strength (not tested here) probably being one of the actual important ones for tarps and tents. There are others too.

However, the video IS a pretty effective demonstration of the all important, and highly prevalent JMT pencil threat to your LW shelter.

"highly prevalent JMT pencil threat to your LW shelter."

Brilliance.

I threw together a reflective cuben tarp very quickly for a festival i was recently at for 4 days. Cuben weight is 1.25 oz per sq/yd. I only put 4 corner tie outs since i was using a tipi tent as the main shelter and just wrapping the reflective cuben around the tent.

For the tie out material, i combined 1 oz cuben with silnylon, cuben on the inside and silnylon on the outside, as i didn't have any heavy duty nylon on hand.

Since it was thrown together pretty quick for the trip, i didn't reinforce the tie out very well, just sewed once across.

However, was pretty surprised that when someone tripped over the guy line, it ripped the cuben and tie out off the main part of the tarp. Dunno, maybe they were pretty heavy? I was surprised that it didn't come apart at the actual tie out itself (where it was sewn). The tie out/cuben didn't completely come off the main body of the tent, it was still hanging on by a few dyneema threads.

How this compares to just silnylon, i don't know, but even heavier duty cuben is not fool, or apparently in this case, festival-fool, proof.

"Nothing is 'fool' proof."

Wait a minute, is this a continuation of the nothing thread on multiple gear use section.. So, you mean nothing as in "no thing" or "nothing" as in nothing (minus or absence of everything) IS fool proof.

In any case, i agree with both interpretations. ;)

And while i do, i was still surprised by what happened. It could have been that a couple or few different people walked through the guy line.
