One day before I was to leave on this trip, I found that my three day weekend had changed to a two, and the start date would have to be delayed for two more days. One thing that I did not change was the itinerary. Instead of taking my time to explore mild pockets of McCurdy Creek and fish the pools of Wigwam, I opted to hike at a quick clip and test my current state of endurance.

The plan was to depart the Lost Park trailhead in the evening after a full day at work. Hike the Brookside-McCurdy trail south-southeast until connecting to the McCurdy Park trail and hiking up down and all around before reaching the Goose Creek trail north. At the Wigwam junction I’d complete the loop by heading west. Thank you to Randy N. at BPL for contributing a bit of trail beta for the loop.

The middle of June and the rivers here in the central mountains are around 130% of average. The cool spring and a dragged out snowmelt turns my eyes to other parts of the state in order to get the groove going for my 2014 summer of backcountry. Lost Creek Wilderness is a popular choice in the state of Colorado right now for backpackers looking to avoid snow.

Nice trip report, Tim. It was great that you got to see that big bull from up close. The phase of the moon in one of your photos leads me to think that we were in Lost Creek at about the same time. When did you go?

Dondo,

I missed the full moon by a few days. I left Sunday evening and returned Tuesday afternoon. On the approach up to the Goose trail junction on Monday I walked by someone on tread with a light pack that I swore looked familiar…

I was out there Monday to Wednesday. Monday afternoon, I recall running across a soloist with a small pack as I was headed down toward Refrigerator Gulch. Was that you with the tattoo on his calf?

Yes sir, wish I would have known! I kept thinking that I knew you from somewhere. There was a group of (around) 10 people on your heels. I'd assume that you plan to add to the recent full collection of LCW reports?

You, young man, are way too fit. :) From a distance, as I was watching you scale that incline as if it weren't even there, I was thinking that you might be Skurka.

I haven't even had a chance to look at my photos yet, but I hope to be able to put something up on my blog sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Glad you had a good time Tim. Nice that you got to see 2 moose! And that is a big day of walking in that terrain. Better you than me! :)
