I'm looking for a pair of gaiters to wear with Brooks Cascadia trail runners and maybe Salomon Quests. I have a pair of Dirty Girls I wear with shorts while running but looking for something to go over pants. I hear lots of complaints about the strap under the shoe not holding up so looking for some experienced input. Thanks in advance.

What's the issue with wearing your current gaiters with pants? I use dirty girl gaiters with pants for 3 season use and only switch to a knee-high gaiter for winter and mountaineering use. The knee-highs I use are mountain hardwear nut shell high gaiters and they use a bit of cordage as the under-foot attachment.

The cord it comes with is something like standard paracord and it's not all that great, (absorbs water and freezes, sticks to snow and random twigs and things and you'll be constantly kicking the ground to clear it). You can easily replace this with a good strong, abrasion-resistant waterproof cord like spectra, though. This can be easily replaced if it fails in the field although I've only had to do so once in a couple years worth of winter trips.

I spent some days wearing Dirty Girl gaiters, and they went over the bottom one inch of pants cuff. Now, they may not be intended to be worn that way, so you have to check out the fit carefully.

After a day on the trail, I would start to peel off these various layers to get to bare feet. The texture of my socks had been embossed into my ankle skin, mostly because of the tight fit of the gaiters.

I'd say the point is to keep the dirt and grit out of your shoes. It you merely have an problem with getting dirt on your legs maybe that is a whole other type of issue. :-)

Personally I like to hide my hairy Mediterranean legs but I find that works with pants tucked in or out.

Lastly if you just want to pretend to be a mountaineer maybe run that one past your analyst. If cosplay is your thing might I suggest lederhosen as an option.
