I need a small tarp to cover my bike and gear when I bikepack and stealth camp with a bivy. So, is anyone making a simple rectangular bivy for real cheap that's in a stealth-camp friendly color like black or dark green? I used to have a Hennessy Hammock tarp and that was ideal, but I don't have it anymore.

The lighter the better, but I don't want to spend a lot. $30 would be ideal, willing to consider a bit more expensive too.

So, budget backpackers, what exists?!

You know, for the cheapest lightweight quality tarp for the purpose you describe, I'd suggest getting a large cheap tent footprint on sale or clearance. I just saw dozens under $30 at the REI garage sale

Have you considered black 3-mil contractor bags? You can get a box for less than $30, cut two open, lay them flat and tape them. They're pretty durable provided you're not careless. If you are, you have a whole box.

David,
That is an excellent idea. I've been toying with the idea of doing some cowboy camping but wanted a tarp if the weather turns. This looks like an awesome way to get a large piece of waterproof fabric I could shape into the desired tarp size/shape. The funny thing is that I had already planned on using the footprint from an old tent as a ground cloth. Not sure why I didn't think of a footprint as a tarp. Thanks for the inspiration!

I have a 5x9ish MYOG flat tarp you can have for $10 shipped. It is not pretty by any means. It was my first project when I was trying to figure out how to sew. It is fully functional though if you can get over the ugliness of the stitching. It is black and made out of 1.1oz silnylon. Red tie outs. I just set it up a few days ago and had it stretched out very tight over night in some good wind and it did fine.

Let me know if you want it.

Ben
