To my esteemed fellow backpackers;

I'm working on an article discussing pack design, and it would be greatly enhanced with some more numbers. Specifically, pack dimension numbers. I need the width of the back panel (noting any taper, like with the Golite Jam), height of the back from the base to the top of the extension collar (measured flat), and the circumference at the bottom (~2 inches above the bottom seam) and the very top. Measuring bottom circumference can be tricky in packs with rigid or bulky suspension elements. Having an assistant hold it extended flat with two hands inside while you measure is suggested.

If owners could provide those four figures for the following packs, I'd appreciate it. Please note which size pack you have, and the year in which it was made.

ULA CDT
ULA Ohm
ULA Circuit
ULA Catalyst

Golite Jam 35, 50, and 70

SMD Fusion 50 and 65

MLD Burn, Exodus, and Arc

Zpacks Arc Blast in any/all the sizes offered

"Zpacks Arc Blast in any/all the sizes offered"

That's interesting. I guess you don't need the dimensions on their other models.

I get more interested in the interior dimensions of packs. For example, will a particular bear canister fit inside? Will the same canister fit if it is wrapped in a sleep pad of a certain thickness?

Ohm 2.0

Size Large Torso, 2014

Width of back panel:
315mm on the bottom, 305mm on top.

Height of the back:
900mm total (655mm from bottom to top of hoop, so 245mm extension collar).

Circumference:
970mm on top of extension collar.

930mm on bottom half, just above side pockets (970mm just above taper but incl. side pockets).

Bottom tapers off immediately starting from the bottom on the Ohm. And there are big side pockets immediately.
Will edit to add bottom. Does measuring on the thickest bottom point (after taper) from the inside of the pack sound good?

(edited to add measurements).

Thanks Ito, that's perfect.

Measuring the bottom ends up adding a lot of variability, which cannot really be gotten around. Just above the taper would work.

David you didn't ask for it but might want them

back panel 10"

length 38"

circumference both top and bottom 34"

Here are my figures roughly following Ito's format:

CDT

Pack size: M 18" -21"
Ordered directly from ULA 11/29/2010

Width of back panel:
308 mm on the bottom, 278 on top

Height of the back:
795 mm total

Circumference:
975 mm on top of extension collar, limited slightly by cord/lock.
860 mm on bottom, 2 1/2" above bottom seam (where the flashing bottoms out*)

Ohm

Pack size: MD (18 – 20)
Ordered directly from ULA 3/24/2009

Width of back panel:
310 mm on the bottom, 318 mm on top. Narrows to 308 mm about 15mm below the shoulder straps with the "frame" removed.

Height of back panel:
850 mm total, 860 with frame removed.

Circumference:
915 mm on top of extension collar, limited slightly by cord/lock.
875 mm, 3" above bottom seam (where the flashing bottoms out*)

*The bottom circumference measurement is tricky. Tried (1) the simple brute-force method of flattening the pack, (2) 14 gauge wire bent to 1/2 pack width and inserted into the pack, (3) pex tubing to force the shape, (4) leather belt to force the shape, (5) turn pack inside out. Finally settled on aluminum roof flashing. Insert the somewhat coiled flashing into the pack, let it expand then measure the outside with a tailor's tape. I suppose a down sleeping bag would accomplish the same thing but not as cleanly. The cylinder shape of the 10" tall flashing aligns nicely with the axis of the pack and assures that you are not measuring at a goofy angle. I would happily use another technique. Don't have a second set of helping hands today.

You and I are near neighbors apparently. If you would like to borrow the packs for a few days you are welcome to PM me.

Thanks everyone, most helpful. A few more packs would make the charts even better.

BG, you do know that internal dimensions of sewn products are pretty much the same as external dimensions, right?

Width of pack panel at bottom (items stuffed for filled dimension): 12"

Height, bottom to top of roll collar: 33"

Bottom Circumference: 34"

Circumference at top (roll collar): 36"

"BG, you do know that internal dimensions of sewn products are pretty much the same as external dimensions, right?"

Yes, I know that they are similar. However, due to structured seams and thickness, there are differences in accuracy. One big thing is whether a particular bear canister will fit into a particular backpack. For me at least, it doesn't do a damn bit of good to measure the backpack externally to determine anything. If you are working from the inside, a canister might stretch a backpack out slightly to make a fit. If you are working from the outside, you can't really stretch anything.
