I went to the PCT/JMT last week. Only 7 days but I lost track of time and the day of week, I was totally in the moment all the time. I hung out with thru-hikers. Great weather, no bugs. It was wonderful. Here is my trip report if you really want it.

But damn, the re-entry for some reason has been really hard. I just want to be out there. I don’t want to be here. Usually I’m fine coming back, but not this time.

Anybody relate?

Piper, I can relate…

when I did the JMT solo many years ago from south to north in 22 days, I got to the end and refused to cross that bridge into Happy Isles… I just sat there for an hour or two and did not want it to end… when I finally crossed it was with tears in my eyes…

>>The more I enjoyed the trip, it was a measure of how unhappy I was with my office >>life.

I call it the Sunday Blues.

The more I enjoy a trip, the more depressed I get the night before I go back to work.

Quite frankly, after a while work makes me grumpy, a bit hard to deal with (ask my wife!) and burnt out. Need a change after a bit. Outdoors both helps release the pressure yet makes me a bit depressed as I know the rather artificial cube life is up ahead come morning. I go to bed way too late trying to extend the time off. Bad habit.

I accepted a job offer with a different company (I am giving myself one week in the San Juans before starting).

Though I am excited over the new job, the new environment and the new opportunity, it is ultimately just another step to get out of cubicle land for good..or at least on a flexible basis. :)

Thing is my job is really low stress and recently I moved from an isolated office with absolutely nothing to do to a way more friendly office where I feel like part of a team. The only thing bad about my job is the pay is so low. During this trip I really thought I should relieve this boyfriend of mine of more than the misery of hiking with me. One look at the rental prices and wow, I make less money than what rent costs. And that's with a job in IT. I have nowhere to go. I really want to keep my job because it has a pension in addition to 401k.

I've had this article in draft form for 2-3 months now. About the same time my company was bought out by acquisition firm. :)

This thread, and the fact that I start a new job shortly, gave me the nudge to finish it.

May be of interest to some:
