If a meal with meat was made in mid Mar., vacuum packed, then taken out of the freezer, sent in a resupply box toward the end of May, is it still safe to eat? I'm guessing yes, but since I don't eat meat, I'm not sure how to advise my friend.

Thanks!

I don't suggest eating home dried past 3 months…but that is me. What has the temps been? Stored in hot weather?

Oops, edited to add "Suggest eating home dried meat past 3 months" ;-)

You mean 3 months out of the freezer?

Or 3 months in the freezer?

Let's see–you took it out of the freezer and sent it to an air conditioned post office. They then put it into the cool belly of an airplane, on to another air conditioned post office and delivered to the destination, where it sat at room temperature until your friend picked it up. The only question I have is how did your friend take care of it once he/she received it? This might be the weak link, as all the other places that the stew has been have been conducive to short term shelf stability for a dehydrated and vacuum sealed meal. Did it sit in a warm backpack for several hot days, and then cool down a bit each night?

I think I would just simmer it a bit longer than usual to kill any possible cooties, and give you a big thanks for providing such a great meal. But that's just me…

Was taken out of the freezer May 1 then sent to NC (AT) May 7, then sent back home May 15th, room temp since then. He was considering taking it on a trip to CO but I think we've come to the conclusion that it would be better just to trash it.
Thanks for the responses!
