Call me old fashioned too. For me a big part of camping is getting away from all the techno and connectivity stuff, to experience life in the moment in a natural setting. But we're becoming dinosaurs I guess.

Not me. The whole reason I went to such an effort to get my base weight down to 11 pounds was so I could add back a 3 pound tablet and 7 pounds for my surround sound system. Now I'm just trying to figure out whether I have to trade in my Circuit for a Catalyst in order to fit the sub-woofer in. I suppose I could leave the food behind.

Seriously, I don't expect much support for this sort of thing on a forum where 3 ounce camp shoes are controversial.

Meh. I backpack for a variety of reasons. Most of the time it's for the experience in nature, but not always. Sometimes, especially with a small group, it's just about having fun and enjoying the camaraderie with friends. On those trips I will, at times, bring my movie projector and tyvek movie screen and show movies out in the middle of nowhere. I enjoy that tremendously too.

It does seem like you could also play some fantastic "Blair Witch" type pranks on the other campers with the right type of equipment. Just stealthily hang the tyvek screen off in the distance and then project whatever kind of bogeyman – along with sound. It would be well worth the weight, and potentially oh so much more satisfying than the more venerable "snipe hunting".

Snipe hunting was part of the initiation into the Order of the Arrow when I was a kid. Little suckers sure are fast!

It's never too late Marco.

B.S.A. would be lucky to have a guy with your skill set these days.

I was very disappointed with the adults in our town that are teaching the boys these days. Not bad people. Just not very knowledgeable and/or capable, compared to when I was in the program.

I went along to assist when my son first joined. They drove out to the camp site on 4-wheelers loaded down with cots and coolers and such. The head scoutmaster spent most of the time on his cell phone and there were no organized activities for the boys, except for meal times. No wilderness survival, no knot tying, no first-aid, no nothing. There was some swimming and fishing going on. But, really nothing else.

I honesty tried to relate to them what Scouting "could" be and offered to assist them with some more advanced outings. They told me they liked it just the way it was and that my help wasn't needed. I pulled him out the day we returned from the "camp-out".

It made me realize just how lucky a young man I had been. Ever since, I have been taking my boys out and showing them myself. I now see it as a gift that the Troop was so lame. I've had some really great trips with my sons because of it.
