I hiked out to the Enchanted Valley this weekend with one of my hiking buddies. This trip is what I would call a low-pain-high-reward kind of a hike. Beautiful rain forests, plenty of wildlife, awesome waterfalls, and 13.5 miles of fairly easy trail.
.
From a gear perspective, this was the first time my base-weight was as low as 8.5 lbs before adding my camera and bear spray. I don’t regret adding the camera as it’s something I enjoy but the bear spray is always something I’m torn on when in black bear country.
On one hand, I realize that it’s unbelievably unlikely that my safety will ever be threatened by a black bear but on the other, I realize that the best outcome for both an aggressive bear and myself would be to use the bear spray. Every time I’m at a point where I’m ready to leave it home altogether, I’ll hear a story from a Rainier NP ranger about having a black bear repeatedly bluff charge them. I’d hate to see the bear get euthanized and more importantly, I’d hate for it to rip me a new one.
Anyways, here’s the trip report in all its glory: Enchanted Valley
