"Why not buy a discount casual cotton shirt?". Cotton doesn't provide much sun protection."

I wear long sleeve cotton shirts when backpacking in the summer… much cooler on those long ascents in the sun… as for sun protection… if you launder your cotton clothing in Sun Guard (by Rit)the sun protection will be increased to UPF 30… and it doesn't sweat off like sun screen… lasts for 30 washings.

Hi Billy Ray,

Any idea what the active ingredient is in that stuff?

The box lists the active ingredient as:
Ciba Tinosorb FD

I once did some reading on the product and I think I remember reading that the same ingredients are included in regular laundry soap, but I would assume a higher concentration in this product.

I am always concerned about what chemicals contact my skin, but my reasoning is that if it takes 30 wearings and 30 washings to remove the stuff, there probably isn't much getting on your skin at any one time… and maybe be safer than the stuff in sun screen.
But who could know such a thing for sure?

Billy

Billy Ray: no doubt cotton is cooler than nylon or other synthetics. Attaining a 30 upf with a cotton shirt is excellent.
