Does anybody have any experience with Detroit, OR as a resupply town, or a place to take a zero?

I’m trying to figure out a resupply point to replace Olallie Lakes Resort. It looks like Detroit could end up being a LONG (25 mi?) walk out on a series of forest roads (NF-4220 to NF-46). On the other hand, there appears (by satellite) to be a pretty big parking lot right where the PCT crosses NF-4220 (presumably parking for Breitenbush Lake), and perhaps there’s a lot of traffic on weekends.

Does anybody have any experience with hitching on NF-4220, or with the town of Detroit itself? If so, I’d appreciate any beta.

It has been many years since I was last there, but you should be able to get a hitch into Detroit from either the resort store or from Olallie Lake campground. Traffic – what little there is – has to pass both to reach Breitenbush Hot Springs.

Getting BACK to the trail will be another matter entirely and, unless you luck out and catch someone headed to the resort, the CG, or Breitenbush Hot Springs it could take multiple hitches AND you will need to know the road junctions where you'll need to change rides.

Detroit is a very small (pop. 202 in 2010) tourist town. The closest lodging is The Lodge at Detroit Lake (lodgeatdetroitlake.com) about 0.2 miles away. Rooms run $100 – $130 per night. There are at least 2 restaurants right in town. As I recall, the food was very good.

Detroit has a grocery store, restaurants, etc. Tourist town. I think that would be a good re-supply town.

A lot of hikers go to Pamelia Lake, maybe you could get a ride from there. And it's maybe 5 miles to highway 22 which has a lot of traffic, maybe get a ride to Detroit if you have a sign saying "PCT hiker"? 12 miles further along highway 22
