Would the tripod be necessary. Couldnt you simply turn the canister upside-down and lean it against a rock or twig?

Not necessary… but it looks cool… and after spending 50 or 100 per oz saved on other expensive lightweight gear we can splurge part of our saved weight on other expensive unnecessary things :) billy

The weight isnt the issue for me, its more about simplicity. I've got plenty of "cool" stuff, but I dont fall in love with it. Most stuff only last one or two hikes and has to be replaced anyway. Knowing me, I would likely lose this tripod in the first couple hundred miles.
