These seem to come up pretty often. Perhaps it might be best to have one running thread where people can post the latest coupon codes.

I'd like to take advantage of one of these STP sales. What are UL folks buying from STP? What are the hot UL items?

The only items I have ever bought from STP is clothing. Got a really good deal on socks a couple years ago.

I also mostly find clothes. Recently I got an Icebreaker t shirt and tights and a pair of Brooks Cascadia shoes. All very good deals. Otherwise, I find STP much better for winter gear that summer backpacking. Lots of great AT skis, for example.

This is where I hoard up on my Terra Fi’s (not the Lite!). Right now STP doesn’t have my size 9. They weigh 10oz each. I don’t know where STP gets their weight. Applying all my coupons, I usually get these sandals in the $40 range. Not bad for robust footwear.

I have a few Terra Fi 3’s left in my closet. It looks like their Terra Fi 4’s may be heavier. Sooner or later I may be trying those.

Over the years, I've only purchased a few things from them. I've been into the store in Reno a few times, hard to find stuff or backup stock like when looking at boots or shoes.

Some things come and go quickly, while other stick around. I just wait for the occasional super discount with $.99 shipping no minimum. Some things that I remember were:

La Sportiva Raptors – $56 / pair ( bought 3 pair)

Moraknife – $8.56 – bought 2

OR long sleeve Echo quarter zip – $28

Icebreaker merino socks ( many styles) – $5.86 / pair

Mountain Hardwear Thruway 50 pack – $104 ( my teenage son's first pack)

Various Terramar shirts that are copies of Patagucci products – all under $15 / piece

AMK 3.0 first aid kits – under $5 / piece – great starter for diy kits.

If the last ounce matters and money is no object, don't shop hear. But with some regular scanning there are some good deals.

Socks and baselayers mostly. There do seem to be some great deals on shoes, but they charge shipping fees on returns, so I don't generally take the risk.

Right now there seem to be some good deals:

MH Phantom 32 for 157
Klymit Inertia XL for 50

KCU8333X 99¢ Shipping on orders $75+ and An Extra 45% OFF 18,000+ Items! Sale prices expire at 11:59pm (MDT) Thursday, June 12, 2014.

Good to know, and AMEN on the need for paid returns for footwear.

I've yet to take the big plunge of buying footwear online. I see Zappos charges near full retail, but pays shipping both ways.

Bought a pair of Brooks for a great discount. Just could not resist the price for 40%+ off. I already had the Cascadia so I was fairly certain about their sizing. Otherwise, no online shoe purchases without free return shipping! Been there, done that : (

What are we buying?

Buffs. I use them constantly. ~$22 in the store-huge ripoff for what they are, but I love them. ~$9 with a coupon at STP.
Socks. Don't even want to think about how many Smartwool and Point 6 merino wool socks I've bought.
Gifts. I've bought a lot of Buffs, merino socks and beanies as gifts, too.
Clothing. T-shirts and tons of baselayers, short and long, for work. Terramar, Carharrt, etc, plus a bunch of Icebreaker stuff that's ended up being used mostly for work, too. Still waiting for the day I click on men's baselayers and a selection of Patagonia Capilene fills the page while angels sing in the background.
Footwear. My favorite shoes are Garmonts. I paid ~$155 retail for the original pair. Bought the current ones on sale for ~$105. My new spare pair came from STP. <$60.

The hardest thing for me is avoiding impulse buying when the prices are so low that I begin to want things I wouldn't otherwise buy. That's NOT "saving" money!

It is hard to find gear…..but I have bought two pairs of Black diamond alpine carbon corks. And, my local STP carries jetboil fuel canisters….which are cheaper than retail normally, and then combine with a 35-40% coupon makes for cheap fuel.

Usually I buy clothing…in fact, most everything in my hiking wardrobe is from STP. From bottom up ->

merrel mix masters / trail gloves / road gloves
icebreaker and smartwool socks
Dakota grizzly hiking pants
several exofficio, Columbia, mountain hardwear nylon/polyster shirts of various styles
mountain hardwear ghost whisperer down jacket (non hooded)
marmot wind jacket
various buffs
icebreaker beanie
hiking hat

I have also bought cheap tent stakes, various things like emergency ponchos, etc.

ALSO..I thought it was only in my local store, but they also sell nikwax products online now …like down wash which you can get cheap!! I also see that they have merino wool buffs now so I'll pick one up as I've been meaning to try that version.

Thanks for posting the deal Richard. I found a pair of BD Trail Back poles for $42. This will be my first set of poles. Not anywhere near the lightest (18 oz pr), but reportedly very tough and durable, and perhaps appropriate for a newbie pole user.

Why do they give you guys the creeps? They are now owned by T J Max and not particularly sketchy though prices and availability do change and a lot of what they sell is totally uninteresting. Do your research and be ready to jump on the good deals or wait for something you actually need to come up.

I've bought a ton of stuff from STP over the years including a couple of brooks-range guide tarps and a down sweater and a bunch of trail runners, approach shoes, ski boots, gloves, hats, sunglasses as well as lots of less outdoorsy things like carhartts etc.

Sign up for there email list and filter it to skip your inbox and go straight to a folder and you will pretty much always have a good coupon…35% comes out about once a week in some form or the other and you can sometimes get 40% or more off though those are often limited.

For shoes I'd recommend buying your first pair somewhere local but once you know your size in a brand/model watch for deals on more as shoes wear our pretty quickly at least for me.

Over the years, I've bought lots of stuff from Sierra Trading Post.Mostly clothing or footwear, but also gear. Don't take purchases lightly, since shipping costs are usually pretty high, and returns are extremely expensive.

I've placed dozens of orders with STP and have had zero issues. I usually order when there's a free shipping code and returns are around $7 per box or free if you are doing an exchange. You can return items from multiple orders in one box, so really the return shipping is pretty reasonable.

I recently bought some hiking shoes (among other things I ordered) from STP that didn't fit right. When I processed my return online I was given the option to take an "instant store credit" (vs. refund).

If you choose this option, they give you an instant credit for the amount (before you even return the package), the return shipping is free, AND your next order that you buy with your credit is also free! I think that is as reasonable as it gets! For that reason, I am a fan of STP, despite their sometimes oddball inventory.

Note: if you don't return the package within a set amount of time — I don't remember what it was but I believe something like 2 weeks — then they will charge your credit card again for the amount.

Don't know how this happened but I got 40% off (stacking) with

SAF62414

It was supposed to be 35%.

So a Leki Wanderfreund ($60 retail) was $27.

Varies by item, but the current "up to 80% off" coupon, DWB0447J has some good deals.
Just stocked up on 6pr of the Point 6 midweight socks that I use for work, 5pr of Smartwool toe socks and another Buff for my girlfriend, plus 2 more Terramar Helix shirts for working out. For $116…
